About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Orientation to the ward and staff.
Exposure to the patient/clients.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students are allocated an assessor prior to the placement.
The student will work within a team and have an assessor and an associate assessor.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
12 Hr shifts are in operation
Days - 07.00 - 19.30
Nights - 19.00 - 07.30
Plus 1 half day per month 07.00 - 13.30 to make up the hours to 150.
Students are required to contact the ward staff if sick.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
- Gastroenterology, incorporating upper GI and colorectal problems.
- Intestinal failure.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
An activities of living model of care, adapted for gastroenterology.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Health and safety, hygiene, wound care, observation skills, nutrition, elimination, drug administration.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Stoma care
- Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
- Epidural pain management
- Parenteral and enteral feeding.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Work sheets; teaching sessions and study days. Study sessions; reference literature; teaching packs; internet access.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Monthly research forum; documentation audit; annual educational audit; updating learning packages.
