About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

  • Orientation to clinic, staff and welcome to the HV team
  • Overview of health visiting service
  • Allocated a mentor and associated mentor
  • Student welcome pack given and learning contracts agreed

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Students work with mentors as much as possible to gain the best experience. The student will also work with other team members to ensure that are good overview of the health visiting core programme is achieved throughout the placement.

Mentors attend annual updates and complete a personal professional portfolio showing evidence of learning.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?


9am -5pm.



Shift Notes:

No weekends as a rule but students may spend time with other agencies as a spoke placement that work evenings and weekends.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Students will have the opportunity to explore the delivery of the health visiting service within home visits and clinic environments.

Immunisation sessions, safeguarding visits, development visits, new birth assessments and follow up assessments.

Principles of Health visiting.
