About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Please download the Student Welcome Pack and the Children's Community Nursing Team Placement Charter prior to commencing placement

The off duty will be organised so that you work with your mentors, directly or indirectly, for at least 40% of your placement, but also have the opportunity to work with other members of the team experiencing different ways of delivering care. Each member of staff will be able to broaden your nursing skills and knowledge.
You will be allocated a mentor and given at least your first 2 weeks shifts prior to commencing the placement. Please ring/ email us to gain this information.
We aim to complete all paperwork on time and give you as much support as possible.
Spoke placements can also be arranged in accordance with your identified learning outcomes and exposures.
In an attempt to meet your learning outcomes and to ensure that your experience is varied and interesting, you may require working a variety of shift patterns including weekends.
For your first shift on placement, you will be allocated to work with your mentor in order to complete your initial introduction and paperwork.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

We are an integrated team of nurses and support workers with a range of different skills in community care. These include:
Long term and chronic and complex needs
Palliative care
Special school nursing
Acute Care – Which includes some nurses spending part of their time on the PANDA observation and assessment unit based at Salford Royal
Wound care and community Clinics
Transition to adult services
Vulnerable Young Persons Team
Asthma Nurse
Epilepsy Nurse

We care for children age 0-18 in the Community. 0-16 on the PANDA unit at SRFT

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Adaptation of Roper, Logan and Tierney

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Taking observations Inc. temp, pulse, BP and respirations
ANTT and Wound Care
Assessing children in their own homes, PANDA and Clinic
Medicines Management

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Assessment of children over the phone using pre-defined assessment documentation
Plastering (In plaster clinic and on PANDA)
