About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Orientation/ Induction booklet, numerous learning packs, organised departmental visits, semester specific ward resource area.

Mentors allocated before students arrival on the ward.

All students will be allocated a mentor/associate mentor prior to the commencement in practice. The student will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours.

Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional). 

Please contact the placement no sooner than two weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Irwell ward follows the Care Programme Approach model as well as the 20 identified areas of the recovery model

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Mental Health diagnosis
  • 1:1 interview techniques
  • Mental Health assessment
  • Therapeutic activities incorporated into mental health assessment
  • Admission/discharge procedures - incorporating care programme approach
  • Mental Health Act
  • Risk assessment management
  • Violence and aggression management
  • Hygiene issues - handwashing, infection control etc.
  • Physical observations
  • Admin of medication and injections

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Diabetes Management.
  • Physical Examination.
  • Communication i.e. Chairing a therapeutic group

What resources are available to help students learning?

  • All members of the team are excellent resources to support you in your learning e-learning programmes

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

A recent study has taken place into debriefing following incidents in particular violence and aggression. There are other studies being undertaken across the Trafford directorate and there are research link nurses in place.
