About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Initial meeting and orientation to unit by mentor.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All qualified staff are mentors; we currently have 2 associate mentors. One of our associate mentors is due to commence mentorship training later this year.

All mentors are allocated to students as part of a rolling programme.

All mentors are provided with time to attend annual mentor updates.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?




Shift Notes:


  • 8:15am-17:00 Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays
  • 8:15am - 12:45pm Wednesdays

Clinic is due to move out to a community base on the 1/10/12. Shift patterns will change and there will be changes in the service we provide.

We are awaiting confirmation of the new service set up and location or locations of the clinics.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

  • General ophthalmic outpatient clinics, orthoptists, diagnostic AMD, FFA, HFT, Topography
  • Specialist clinics for Glaucoma, Retinal, Oculoplastics, AMD and intravitreal injections
  • Casualty triage/treatments
  • Pre-op assessment
  • Post op cataract assessment.

Orems model of care.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Communication and working with communication barriers Body image issues
