About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students are requested to make contact with Anita Armitage prior to placement (2-3 week) to arrange an informal visit. This visit will include an informal interview, an orientation to geography of Hospice, an introduction to members of staff, some informal action planning and allocation to specific area.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Allocated on first day of placement on specific area of placement.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
7am - 3pm
1.30pm - 9.30 pm
9pm - 7.30am
Day Hospice hours are 9am - 4pm Monday - Friday Generally students on 24 hour care work a mixture of earlies and late shift Monday - Friday. However should a student wish to work night duty or at weekend this can be negotiated.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
24 Hour Care Inpatient Unit (12 beds) Day Hospice up to 20 places Monday - Friday.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney. Orem's
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Communication, Personal care, Multi-Disciplinary Team Input and Discharge planning, Peer Support.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Therapeutic touch, Bereavement support, Use of hoist as bathing aid. Care of/respect for the dead, Holistic Care.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Books, Journals, Access to any planned study days, Limited computer access, Access to MDT.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Currently involved in Research project "Continuity of Care for Adult Cancer Patients with Support and Palliative Care Needs" being conducted by Mr Sean Heghes, Macmillan Research Fellow based at Manchester University.
Macmillan Nurse/Physiotherapist/Dietician. Social worker/Day Hospice/Chaplain/Complementary Therapist/Lymphoedema Specialist Nurse/Key worked
The Hospice is an independent Registered Charity. Meals can be ordered on site before 11am. Free car parking is available.
