About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students will meet their mentor, agree objectives, and undergo a core induction.

Induction pack, tour of the unit, meeting ward manager, allocation into team working, meet the MDT.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Students are usually allocated a mentor on arrival.

To be actively involved, allocated time to spend with mentors/associate mentors.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?


7am - 3pm


1pm - 9pm


7pm - 7.15am

Shift Notes:

Long Day: 7am - 7.15pm.

Students are encouraged to work a mixture of early, late and night shifts which incorporate some weekend exposure to experience 24 hour care. Students are expected to work at least 40% of their time with their mentor.

Students are encouraged to work two long days and two short days and must have stipulated meal breaks.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Caring for patients with severe mental health problems, e.g. drug and alcohol related problems, challenging behaviours.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

The Model of Care for Isherwood Ward will be based on the principles of recovery.

The model of care will be dynamic and responsive to the individual and collective needs of the patients who are residing in the service at the time.

The Health Recovery Model which is currently used within the Directorate focuses upon wellness as opposed to illness. Staff will be supported to enable and empower the patients to take and maintain control over their own lives. The degree of responsibility and empowerment vested in each N will be dependent on the point the patient is at in their own pathway as it is recognised within this group of patients that the recovery process and any risks may fluctuate at times.

There will be active participation of the patients continued journey on his pathway out of secure services.

The Health Recovery Model will guide staff to:

  • Recognise and support the personal resourcefulness of the patients
  • Create an environment of HOPE for the patients
  • Support patients to take control to make real choices based on objective information
  • Create a relationship that encourages the growth of self-confidence, self-esteem and self-acceptance for the patients
  • Continue to explore current coping strategies and experience to support adaptive functioning
  • Support the patients to take positive risks, which may fail, then support them to try again
  • Combat, stigma, discrimination and social exclusion.

The Model aims to demonstrate a commitment to recovery, promote good risk management, evidence based care and life-long learning.

The Model incorporates an understanding and implementation of procedural physical and relational security to maintain a balance between public safety and the recovery of the patients.

Students are expected to complete a spoke placement feedback sheet to identify what learning outcomes they want to achieve, what they learnt from the spoke experience and a discussion with their mentor of their experience and what further development opportunities would support their learning.

Additional Information

Students are expected to contact the ward and the University of they are not going to be attending placement.

Dress Code

Students are not required to wear their Uniform but expected to dress smart casual and wear their ID badges at all times. Students are expected to maintain a professional image at all times in and outside clinical areas. Anybody in inappropriate dress will be sent home immediately on arrival to change.


You may be supported by practice staff studying for the preparation for mentorship course, this is overseen by a qualified mentor and your documents will be countersigned by the mentor.
