About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

On commencement students will be:-

  • Introduced to the office environment, introduced to staff, work through local and University induction material.
  • Mentor will discuss and agree outcomes to be worked towards, there are opportunities for students to access spoke placements within other teams and other disciplines.
  • Dependent on level of experience, students may be allocated a small caseload, supervised by Mentor and other members of nursing staff.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

CMHT staff work with clients who suffer a whole range of mental illness, they are required to respond to any situation that is referred into the service from baseline assessment to crisis work, all clients receive care under the Care Programme Approach (CPA) framework.

  • CMHT Knowledge of the impact that ageing may have on the client, in relation to their physical and mental wellbeing, their environment and spiritual requirements
  • Gain an understanding and ability to assist in assessing Capacity, Deprivation of Liberty, Mental Health Act, Continuing Care, Specialist Health Needs Assessment, Safeguarding Adults
  • I/M injections
  • MATS
  • The ability to undertake a variety of assessments to enable diagnosis of Dementia

What resources are available to help students learning?

Access to internet, the offices hold a variety of reference books and journals. Your Mentor and other members of staff, all have a variety of different experiences and skills that you will be able to tap into - just ask.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Regular audits are undertaken as per Trust/National Guidelines

Spoke Placements

There are opportunities to make arrangements to shadow any of the staff of other disciplines working within the teams, access Funded Nursing Care team who undertake Continuing Care assessments, the integrated patch teams which are now predominantly based within the Primary Care setting, intermediate care teams i.e. Rose Mill Unit - provides residential assessment for clients suffering moderate/severe cognitive change Poppy Day Unit- provides day care for clients suffering moderate to/severe cognitive change

Shadow staff working within the voluntary sector e.g. Age concern.

Mentor will be able to assist with making choices of appropriate placement.

Additional Information

Whilst undertaking this placement it is expected that students will not request leave to undertake any other placement requirements- for example if the student needs to access night shifts to ensure placement outcomes are to be met.
