About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

All students will be allocated a mentor/associate mentor prior to their commencement in practice.  The student will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours.
Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional).
Please contact the placement no sooner than 2 weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All student are allocated a mentor or associate mentor to support them in practice. We can also accommodate third year final students with the support of a sign off mentor
All mentor/associates and sign off mentors are updated on an annual basis as required by the NMC (2008) and are registered on the Live Register for mentors held by the Practice Education Facilitators
In the event of your allocated mentor being unavailable for annual leave or sickness alternative arrangements will be made to support your practice
All qualified staff have the opportunity to study the preparation for mentorship module credited or not credited
Sometimes you may be mentored by a trainee mentor, this will be overseen by a qualified mentor in practice

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?


07.30am - 15.30pm


13.00pm - 21.00pm


19.30pm - 07.45am

Shift Notes:

07.30am - 19.45pm
30 minute break on short shifts, 1 hour break on long day and night shift
Students are expected to work a variety of shifts to experience the 24-hour cycle of care

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Delamere is a 15 bedded mental health assessment ward for older adults with both organic and functional illnesses, however out patients predominantly have organic illnesses.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

CPA, MANCAS, Recovery Star.

Spoke Placements

Students can access a variety of spoke placements which are highlighted in the student welcome pack and in a spoke folder in placement ECT, CMHT (organic services), Poppy Day Centre, Moss Ward (dementia services), physical health care team, physiotherapy, occupational therapy.
Students are expected to complete a spoke placement feedback sheet to identify what learning outcomes they want to achieve, what they learnt from the spoke experience and a discussion with their mentor of their experience and what further development opportunities would support their learning.

Dress Code

Students are required to wear their Uniform and wear their ID badges at all times. Anybody in inappropriate dress will be sent home immediately on arrival to change.
