About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Orientation to Ward and unit, allocated a mentor and organised shifts with mentor.

Initial assessment of action plans, opportunities available to achieve action plans.

Student booklet given and resource room available.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Student will be allocated mentor on first day will hopefully meet mentor on first day if possible if not within the first week.

Will be able to have shifts allocated with mentor as much as possible.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?


7.00 a.m. - 3.00 p.m.


1.00 pm - 9.00 pm


8.45 p.m. - 7.15 a.m.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

  • Dispensing of medication
  • Care planning collaboratively
  • Weekly reviews and major reviews - provide report, attend and present info
  • Escorting patients (under supervision)
  • Management of ward and staff (under supervision)
  • Involvement in Care Delivery (under supervision)

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Psychodynamic model (based on Barnes 1968).

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Dispensing of medication /depots taking of physical observation, observing levels (under supervision.
  • Care planning
  • Attending reviews and major reviews
  • Assist in devising nursing reports for reviews.
  • Write notes in patients records (under supervision)
  • Management skills, delegation skills

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Students may wish to spend some shifts on Ambleside Ward, which is the acute women's ward, to experience and compare different skills and client mix.
