About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students have an allocated Mentor Team. CCU follows a structured programme of learning for pre registration students. Students on Spoke Placement will also receive a structured plan to follow in order to gain full benefit of the CCU experience.
They will be introduced to the staff and given a brief overview of student/ Mentor expectations. Student Nurses will always work alongside a qualified member of staff.
All students will receive a Welcome and Orientation Pack and an Induction Programme. Visits can be arranged with the Secondary Prevention Nurses, Cardiac Rehabilitation, D.C Cardioversions on the Day Case Unit.
The opportunity will also be there to work with the Thrombolysis facilitator.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
CCU follows a Team Mentorship approach and a qualified Mentor will be ultimately responsible for completing your assessments.
Student nurses are allocated a Mentor and Associate Mentor pre placement whose name will be displayed on the Student Information Board.
The student will work with their Mentor for a minimum of two shifts per week and at all other times they will work with an Associate Mentor or another team member.
Your Mentor should meet with you during the first week on the ward.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
7.30am - 3.30pm
1.30pm - 9.30pm
9.00pm - 7.45am
We do offer 24 hour care provision and students will experience this as per University guidelines. It will be expected that Students will work at weekends.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Coronary Care Unit is a 8 bed mixed sex unit. CCU is on 24-hour take from A&E, Ward 7 (EAU), other wards within the Trust and occasionally surrounding hospitals.
Patients are treated for a variety of cardiac problems. These include acute attacks of coronary heart disease such as Myocardial Infarction, Acute Coronary Syndromes, heart failures, rhythm abnormalities and other life threatening events.
Patients may require transfer to other hospitals for procedures such as Coronary Angiography/Angioplasty and Coronary Artery Bypass Graft.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
A modified form of Roper, Logan and Tierney Model facilitates the nursing process. Patients are allocated according to level of dependency therefore fairly sharing the workload.
It is a form of Primary Nursing, the allocated nurse being totally responsible for all aspects of care during their shift.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Basic vital sign measurements TPR and BP SpO2 readings.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Use of Cardiac Monitors.
What resources are available to help students learning?
CCU has access to the Internet as well as a collection of Reference Books in Cardiology. The Unit also has an extensive collection of research articles surrounding issues in Coronary Care Nursing.
A number of Worksheets have been devised to aid teaching in practice and the staff are a never-ending source of research-based information. A structured programme of learning is followed.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
CCU is currently participating in the MINAP audit. It is also subject to fulfilling the requirements of the National Service Framework. All staff have Professional Development Planning and therefore are participating in learning activities. All staff have Clinical Supervision.
Students can attend for a Spoke Placement following consultation with the PEF. A structured programme has been devised to ensure that Spoke Placement students are exposed to a comprehensive CCU experience.

Endeavour to improve the health status of the client as much as possible before their transfer to a general ward.
Counsel the client about future lifestyle and advice on any adjustments that may need to be made.
Give as much help and support as we can on occasions when future active intervention is inappropriate, of no benefit and is contrary to the wishes of the client.
