About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
All students have trust induction on the first day this is usually at Pikes Lane health centre. Students are then asked to arrive around 9am on their second day at the health centre and report to reception.
Each student will be made to feel welcome by being introduced to a member of the team and appropriate staff and shown round the centre.
At some time within the first day a member of staff will go through the induction list with them and all appropriate documentation within the university booklet and also explain about the location of policies and procedures, Fire safety, health and safety, sickness reporting etc.
The student nurse will also be shown modes of communication and mail points, location of message books, fax machine, email access, any teaching and learning resources and an overview of the management structure of the trust.
Hours of duty and uniform policy will be discussed and each student will meet their mentor and associate mentor at the earliest possible opportunity but will have a named person to relate to until they are available. The students initial interview will take place at the earliest possible opportunity but always within the first week.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Adult branch students are allocated a mentor and associate mentor within the district nursing team prior to arrival at their placement and will have the name of their mentor given in the welcome letter sent out by the clinical placement co-ordinator.
Students are asked to contact the placement at least one week before commencement to confirm their arrival. All mentors have a mentorship qualification. All specialist nurses are nurse prescribers.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
The shift patterns for this placement are usually Monday - Friday - 8:30 - 5pm. All students work a thirty seven and a half hour week over 5 days. One hour is allocated for lunch usually between 1pm and 2pm.
Students are expected to work at least a minimum of one weekend within an allocation of 6 weeks. Students are also expected to work with the Evening Service at least two evenings within their placement.
The evening service is currently based at Waters Meeting HC.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
- Care of the Patient within their own home, we now have a separate treatment room service which students will be able to work within.
- Care of patients in a residential home
- Neighbourhood network homes
- Acute and non-acute medical and post operative care
- Wide and varied range of wound care with extensive range of wound dressings
- Compliance and non compliance of treatments
- Maintenance treatments of anaemia, vitamin deficiencies, hormone disorders
- Care of patients with eye problems, post cataract, glaucoma, blindness
- Palliative and terminal care
- Shared care with social services
- Care of the acute and chronically ill short and long term care
- Health promotion situations
- Continence assessments and treatments
- Care of catheterised patients
- Caring for patients with learning difficulties, Alzheimers disease, dementia
- Bowel care, acute and chronic Diabetic care, insulin and non insulin dependant diabetic patients
- DVT care and treatment preventing hospital admissions
- Paraplegic patient care
- Follow up of patients who have had day surgery
- Nephrostomy care
- Ear syringing
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Orems model of self care and also Roper, Logan and Tierneys model based on the activities of daily living. Other models may be used in individual situations appropriate to the needs of the patient.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Male and Female catheterisation
- Recording of Blood pressure
- Recording of Blood sugars
- Injections (Sub Cut and IM)
- Administration of eye drops, creams, lotions etc
- Administration of suppositories, enemas rectal medication
- Aseptic technique and wound care
- Bandaging, wool and crepe and understanding of compression bandaging
- Removal of sutures and clips
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Stoma care
- Central line management
- Syringe driver use and management
- Care of eye prosthesis
- Care of supra pubic catheter
- Understanding Zoladex injections
- Doppler assessments
- Care of gastrostomy and PEG tube management
- Care of chemotherapy and intravenous therapy
What resources are available to help students learning?
We have a student information area which has up to date resources and also ask within our welcome pack for each student to add new information.
All areas have access to the internet and are able to access healthcare databases such as CINAHL after input of a password and code.
We also have our induction booklet which contains a lot of information relating to waters meeting health centre and the area in which the district nursing teams work.

Waters Meeting Health Centre is a newly built centre with a range of different specialist under one roof.
It is also home to the out of hours G.P service and the Evening and Night District nursing Service. The new Treatment room team are also based within this centre.
