About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Mentor and Associate Mentor arranged prior to commencement

Students given time to spoke with other disciplines including Blood transfusion, Haematology Departmemnt, Churchill Unit, District Nurse

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Mentor and assessor arranged prior to student commencing placement and try to allocate mentor or Assessor each shift.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?




Shift Notes:

Early: 08.30 - 5pm Notes: The Team consists of 6 Sister/Charge Nurses 3 junior Sisters 5 Health Care Assistants 1 Physiotherapist 1 Occupational Therapist.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

The team covers the whole of Bolton Community.

We provide home visits and treatment in a clinic room setting at Breightmet Health Centre

What nursing model is used for planning care?

The Model that is used is based on The Roper, Logan & Tierney Model of care

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Assessment, Planning & Evaluating the care given at each clinical intervention

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Observation of Administration of blood and blood products in the patients home, assessment of veins for cannulation. The care of Hickman lines, mid-lines and picc lines.  The observation fo chemotherapy, intravenous antibiotics, intravenous ferrinject, intravenous zolendronate and the participation in venesection clinics.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Close working relationships with Haematology, Mocrobiology, Rheumatology

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Will be able to attend the weekly microbiology meeting to discuss all intravenous antibiotics given within the community setting

Spoke Placements

We encourage all our students to spoke with Churchill Unit, Haematology Department, Blood Transfusion and District Nurse

We also encourage students to identify a gap in their learning and arrange their own spokes if needed
