For over 120 years, the University of Salford has played a significant role in driving social mobility across Salford and Greater Manchester as we understand that whilst talent is everywhere, opportunities are not.
We are incredibly proud to present the philanthropy in action at Salford during 2022, for it is thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors and supporters that we have been able to create a vast number of life-changing programmes for our students, staff, and wider community.

Student Support
As an institution, we are committed to driving social mobility in our region, in helping to raise the aspirations of young people. With the encouragement of our supporters, we have continued our work in this area and ranked 6th in England, and 1st in the North West, on the Social Mobility Index for 2022.
Each of our student support programmes are funded entirely by our wonderful donor community and it is through their generosity that we are able to create an outstanding student experience for those at Salford whilst also helping those who need it most to remain in higher education.

Community
Universities are often unable to financially support projects outside of core learning, but thanks to the incredible donations of our friends, we are able to fund amazing initiatives which not only enrich the student experience but enable us to extend our reach into the community, to have a positive impact on the lives of people across the region, from providing educational support to access to health resources.
Innovation
At the University of Salford, we take pride in our innovative research environment, welcoming students and academics from around the world to deliver research with real world impact.
With thanks to our donors, we are able to provide our community with access to industry-standard equipment and innovative spaces, whilst also supporting extraordinary research taking place at both a national and international level.
Skills for the Future
As a university, we celebrate diversity and are committed to creating equality of opportunity for all within our community as we recognise the importance of our role in helping to develop the next generation of industry-ready graduates.
We are extremely proactive in widening participation across the institution, in particular the support of Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students. The University of Salford is a member of the Race Equality Charter (REC), an initiative led by Advance HE to improve the representation, progression, and success of BAME colleagues and students, providing a framework to identify and reflect on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of minority ethnic colleagues and students.
The University is also a pioneer of breaking down barriers for female students and colleagues, and through the support of our incredible friends and industry partners, we are able to develop a range of initiatives for women across STEM and built environment-related subjects.
Go Beyond
The University is committed to breaking down entry barriers for women considering studying a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) related subject.
With the help of our friends and industry partners, we developed a mentoring programme for our female students, to provide them with an insight into the industry and demonstrate the important role they can play in driving future innovation.
Industry Advice Scheme
The Industry Advice Scheme is our institution-wide mentoring programme, open to all students, though we actively encourage applications from students from a BAME background, students with disabilities, and care experienced students.
BAME Futures Mentoring Programme
The BAME Futures Mentoring Programme launched in 2021 with TalkTalk, connecting TalkTalk’s BAME employee network ‘Empower’ with twelve students from the University. Following the success of the six-month pilot, the Programme will relaunch in January 2022, with Capgemini and Peninsula joining TalkTalk as our industry partners, providing more students with this extraordinary opportunity.
Future Leader Experiences
The University collaborated with Common Purpose to deliver two Future Leader Experiences in 2021, bringing together a diverse range of students with senior leaders from difference industries, giving them the opportunity to further their understanding of the challenges leaders face. We welcomed senior leaders from a range of organisations, including Kellogg’s, Lloyds Banking, Co-op Group, Salford City Council, Laing O’Rourke, and Greater Manchester Police.
