I joined the University of Salford in 2001 as a lecturer in Analytical Chemistry, having previously been a Post-Doctoral Research Associate for 7 years at the University of Leicester. Overall, I have spent 27 years in research mainly involving the measurement and detection of free radicals or free radical damage in biological systems. During the period 2007-2011, I was programme leader for the MSc in Analytical Bioscience & Drug Design and in 2008 I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Analytical Bioscience.

My current roles and responsibilities include programme lead for a number of programmes within the Biomedicine discipline group, teaching at all levels of the programmes and supervision of two PhD students.


Programme Leader for Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Science

I currently teach at all levels of the Biomedicine programmes and on the MSc courses in Analytical Bioscience & Drug Design and Biotechnology covering the areas of analytical chemistry and analytical bioscience. I supervise project students at both level 6 and level M.

Research Interests

My current research interests are focused upon the development of analytical methods (mainly based upon chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS and MALDI-TOF) to measure biomarkers of disease, in particular those associated with free radical damage. In recent studies, we have used MALDI-TOF MS and GC-MS to detect and identify hydroxyl free radicals that have been trapped using nitrone derivatives. Future studies will focus upon expanding this work to develop a rapid assay for measuring free radicals.
