About

Welcome from Professor Jim Yip, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research & Innovation/Dean of College.

The College of Science & Technology will open up a world of new possibilities for you to consider through a wide range of teaching, research, and commerce partnerships. The College consists of three Schools: Built Environment; Computing, Science & Engineering and Environment & Life Sciences. Each school has its own unique courses and expertise, tailored to address real issues in real world situations, crossing disciplines to open up new and exciting opportunities for students, teachers and business partners alike.

Within the College sit several ground breaking research facilities. Pursuing the study of Energy, its consumption and conservation, the College’s ‘house in a lab’ within the Energy Hub has caused a sensation among the scientific and energy research world. This ground breaking facility is a vital tool for understanding how measures to improve energy efficiency work in practice. The Energy Hub’s new base on Campus is Joule House which was the previous home of the world-renowned physicist James Prescott Joule; a fitting place for fantastic research and teaching.

Acoustically, the College hits the high notes with one of the best acoustic research centres within the UK. Our MediaCityUK based acoustic researchers work closely with the BBC in Acoustics and Spatial Audio creating real impacts which can be applied to broadcasting.

In Engineering, top awards have been received by teachers and researchers within the College from the Royal Institute of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Structural Engineers and the Railway Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

Further research and teaching strengths lie in the areas of: Biochemistry, Drug Design & Cancer Research; Parasitology and Diseases (where our academics have received high honours and awards from the Chinese Government); Environmental Systems and Wildlife and Urban Change; Built Environment; Archaeology and Construction and Disaster Management. Our Disaster Management research and teaching team is the first foreign University to deliver on site full accredited course in Quantity Surveying in Sri Lanka.
