Delivery is by full-time (one year) and part-time attendance (three years) at the University. A programme of formal lectures, case discussion seminars and workshops, together with online learning is delivered to students by a team of orthopaedic consultants, radiologists, advanced therapists and other specialists. Attendance is approximately five to six days per module with distance on-line learning released weekly and live webinars. Both full and part-time students are taught together.
All supportive material from the taught days is recorded on our virtual learning environment, Blackboard.
Each of the three clinical modules, upper limb, lower limb, and spinal, covers the advanced assessment and differential diagnosis of orthopaedic and sports-related disorders, including pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative surgery management and rehabilitation strategies.
For those attending full-time, additional observational placements are an integral part of the course. These are arranged for specialist areas of spinal orthopaedics, upper limb orthopaedics and lower limb orthopaedics. Placements are offered in key orthopaedic departments and sports clubs.
Research skills sessions are integrated throughout the course.
Assessment

Professor Len Funk
Len Funk is a Professor at the University and is clinical lead of the MSc Trauma and Orthopaedics course at Salford. He is a Consultant Shoulder and Upper Limb Surgeon based at Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Trust with a private practice based in Manchester. He has strong research and educational interests and expertise.
He specialises in arthroscopic (keyhole) and minimally invasive surgery of the shoulder.
In addition to his surgical qualifications, Prof Funk has a BSc in Sports Physiology and an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering, His special interests include shoulder dislocations, frozen shoulder, arthritis, and sports injuries of the shoulder. He has performed surgery in the UK and across Europe and routinely treats elite and professional athletes, particularly contact sport professionals and rugby players who have suffered shoulder injuries.
Mr Mike Walton

Consultant Shoulder and Trauma Surgeon
Mike is on the specialist register for Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery. He has worked with some of the world’s leading pioneers in tendon pathology at the University of Western Australia. He was involved in the management of athletes and elite soldiers and developed his keyhole and open surgery techniques.

Adam is a Fellowship Trained Hand and Upper Limb Surgeon on the Specialist Register. His research areas include anatomy, elbow replacement and elbow instability

Mr Tim Clough
Mr Clough is Consultant Foot, Ankle and Knee Orthopaedic Surgeon based at Wrightington Hospital. Mr Phil Turner

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport
Phil Turner specialises in all aspects of knee surgery including arthroscopy, primary and revision ligament reconstruction, articular cartilage repair, osteotomy, unicompartmental and total joint replacement and revision arthroplasty.
Phil has always had an interest in medical education and has previously been specialty advisor and programme director in Orthopaedics and is now Head of the School of Surgery in the North Western Postgraduate Deanery.
Susan Buttress
Susan is Senior Lecturer at the University and Course Leader for the MSc Trauma and Orthopaedics. Having worked as a physiotherapist both in the NHS and the private sector, she completed her MPhil in 2001 and her MA (Healthcare Law) in 2006. Her interests lie in postgraduate education, research and development.
