In addition to the general wide-ranging opportunities afforded to graduates of language degrees, this course opens the way to postgraduate training and then to specific careers as professional in-house or freelance translators and interpreters, copywriters, lexicographers and terminologists.
Employers are increasingly looking for graduates who not only have high-level oral and written communication skills in more than one language, but who also have the analytical skills to deal with complex information and carry out mediation tasks in an international multilingual environment.
The real-world focus of this degree helps to produce graduates who are particularly employable, having often carried out work placements in translation companies as part of your International Placement Year.
There are two career paths with languages:
- Specialist language occupations, such as translation, interpreting, subtitling, localisation, dictionary compilation, teaching languages
- Occupations with languages, such as marketing, international import and export, bilingual customer support, journalism, lawyers and bankers

Kristine Berry, BA Hons Modern Languages and Translation and Interpreting Studies (German and Spanish)
After completing my degree I applied and got accepted onto the graduate programme at Aldi to become an area manager, as I had previous retail and customer service experience. After three very successful years I decided it was time to study my MA and pursue my desired career in languages, and chose to return to Salford to study the MA Interpreting and Translating. I didn’t consider any other university and knew Salford was the place for me, which maybe proves how much I enjoyed my BA!
The facilities at the School of Languages are excellent. There are plenty of resources and the interpreting booth is first class and really valuable to anyone training to become an interpreter. The staff are supportive and the whole environment is very friendly and welcoming.
I ultimately want to be an interpreter for the EU, and plan to spend more time in Germany and Spain. I am now enjoying working as a translation project manager at Lloyd International Translation (who have held Business Practice seminars at Salford as part of the MA courses). I am gaining valuable experience in the industry and am able to combine some of my skills gained at Aldi with my language skills

We offer an extensive, well established network of study and work placement providers to students going on their International Placement Year, including large multinationals such as Guinness, Deutsche Bank, Mercedes-Benz and Alcatel. Our flair for international work has seen us develop a growing portfolio of international partnerships and links with foreign universities. This includes European schemes, such as Erasmus, which involve visits and exchanges of both students and staff. We have also recently set up exchange agreements with two Chinese Universities and developed links with Institutions from the Arab World.
We also maintain close links with professional organisations such as PLUG (Professional Languages at Universities Group), CILT (The National Centre for Languages) the Chartered Institute of Linguists – where some of our staff are examiners - and the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. The School is very active in community interpreting (for the courts, the NHS etc) and has made a major contribution to the development of Diploma of Public Service Interpreting training in the region.
