All business students study the same modules in the first year of the course. Second and Final year modules are different according to your selected specialism.
Tourism is arguably the world's largest industry, with increasingly less and less of the world untouched by its influence. As such, it operates in highly dynamic and diverse sets of environments. The modern tourism industry requires managers with relevant knowledge and skills, consequently the aim of this course is to produce employable, entrepreneurial, innovative and responsible graduates who can manage the challenges facing the industry. The application of established as well as cutting-edge theory to practical situations at regional, national and global levels provides vocational training and prepares you for a wide range of career opportunities.
During this course you can apply for one-year professional placement. Salford graduates who have completed a placement have higher marks than average and much better employment prospects. All one-year placement positions are paid and many of our students return to their placement company when they finish the course.
In addition this is also the opportunity to study abroad in Canada, Finland, France and Spain. Teaching is primarily in English and all EU exchanges are eligible to receive Erasmus grants.
A systemic approach is taken to the study of tourism from the beginning of the course; you will progress from understanding more fundamental issues in year 1 to strategic considerations in year 3.
You will learn about the need for the integrated provision of tourism (including attractions, events, amenities, access, transport and distribution), and recognise the requirement for tourism development to acknowledge the interests of not only visitors but also a variety of other stakeholders. You will also consider the impacts of tourism, and recognise the need for responsible management in order to maximize its potential and minimize associated problems.
Alongside this, you will develop knowledge of broader associated managerial issues relating to human, information and financial resources, as well as communication, team working, organizational and analytical problem-solving and creative skills; these will form part of an integrated personal development portfolio.
YEAR 1
Principles of Accounting
The aim of the module is to provide students with a theoretical and practical introduction to Accounting. This module will help students understand the fundamentals of basic accounting methods. It will introduce students to the production of financial statements for decision makers in various organizational structures.

Principles of HRM
This module will provide an insight into the distinct contribution of Human Resource Management policy and practice to employee and organisational performance and success within a UK and international comparative context. It will help students develop an understanding of the interrelationship between the dynamic nature of social relationships within a range of organisations, the broader external environment, and the effective management of human resources and employment relations.

This module aims to provide an introduction to key foundational aspects of the theory and practice of marketing, which are essential to the long term prosperity of organisations and applicable to all specialisations within business. It will enable students to apply marketing principles to real life marketing situations.

Principles of Economics
The aim of this module is to introduce students to key concepts in modern economics, in particular the functioning of markets as the foundation of contemporary economies; It will present an overview of the main microeconomic principles of economic behaviour and the main concepts within macroeconomics, and to explore the relationship between these microeconomic principles and macroeconomic concepts.

This module enables students to present, evaluate and interpret quantitative data in order to develop a capacity for making business decisions. Professional Development
Building on the embedded skills developed during level 4 of the programme the module aims to enable the student to plan and carry out appropriate professional development activities to increase employability and performance, including self presentation, professional networking, project planning and implementation, team working, influencing and multimedia communication. Project Management
This module will help students to develop knowledge and critical understanding of the principles of effective project management within a global business context and the ways in which these principles have developed. It will help to facilitate and understanding of project management skills techniques, methods and tools and their application and limitations.

This module introduces students to the operation of legal systems in the global business context and the areas of law that underpin the practice of effective business management. Students will develop a working knowledge of the law relating to contracts in different business contexts and their effective negotiation.

Event Planning and Development
This module provides students with a course of study in the successful delivery of an event and the impact of events enabling students to problem solve within the context of event preparation, execution and post evaluation. It allows students to critically evaluate their performance and contribution to events delivery with reference to the global market. It will also enable students to successfully execute the theoretical aspects of the programme within a real situation, allowing students to develop their project management skills.

Students will learn how to apply the underlying concepts and principles of event tourism. OPTIONAL YEAR
On completion of year 2 you may choose to undertake either a paid placement, or study abroad for a year. If you choose to study abroad you will spend your academic year at one of our partner universities, enhancing your language skills and international business knowledge.

Business Ethics and Sustainability
This module equips students with an appreciation and in-depth understanding of the implications of Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability within national and international organisations. This module will also develop students’ knowledge with respect to the importance of the balance between shareholders, stakeholders and the purpose and values of the organisation. It will explore the roles of social and technological innovation in global ethical organisations in order to prepare students for future employability.
