This course combines a grounding in the central areas of linguistics with a foundation in applied language study. It also allows you to focus on practical and theoretical aspects of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
It includes a programme of professional development of seminars, visits, and some opportunities for informal teaching practice, as well as opportunities to attend Linguistics research seminar series and masterclasses.
It is designed to meet the needs of applicants who would like to learn more about the English language and how it works, English language teaching, and language learning processes, and is particularly suitable for students who want to become teachers of English as a second language or who want to go on to other work related to these fields. It is also ideal for students who wish to go on to doctoral research.
This course combines theoretical insights in English language teaching (ELT) and learning with practical applications to specified contexts.
Semester 1
You will take two core modules.
Language Structure and Use (30 credits)
You will develop an understanding of the key concepts in the study of language structure and use and apply them to the analysis of empirical data relating to issues in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. Subjects covered will include, phonology and morphology; phrase structure; sentence meaning versus utterance meaning; semantic properties; language and society; language variation; and the cultural dimensions of language use.

Second Language Learning and Teaching
You will gain an understanding of second language learning theories and the key methodological approaches to the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). You will also cover the key issues in curriculum and syllabus design in the TESOL field. You will apply your knowledge to specific contexts of the learning and teaching of second languages.

Semester 2
You will take two core modules.
Materials and Technology
This module covers the theory and practice of materials design, evaluation and adaptation in both paper-based and digital forms. You will explore a range of materials and consider how they can be applied and adapted in classroom and self-study contexts. With the rise of digital media this includes a critical awareness of the theory and practice of computer assisted language learning (CALL) for both teaching and professional development purposes.

Research Methods for TESOL and Applied Linguistics (30 credits)
You will gain an understanding and practical experience of a range of methodologies in TESOL / language pedagogy research and applied linguistics research, and will have the opportunity to apply them to linguistic and other data. You will develop an understanding of the issues raised by particular methodologies and learn to evaluate and analyse different types of linguistic data.

Semester 3
For the full Masters qualification a dissertation is required.
12-15,000 word dissertation
You will undertake a sustained piece of research on an approved topic from within the discipline of TESOL/Applied Linguistics, demonstrating knowledge and understanding through reflection on theoretical issues and their application in practice.
