Summer English Study Programme
- International students can apply
You will have 23 academic hours of English classes each week. You will also be expected to do homework and open learning in the Language Resource Centre.
When you arrive you will be given a test and placed in a group of students with a similar language level. There are normally three different levels: pre-intermediate, intermediate and upper-intermediate. At all levels you will have classes in academic reading and writing, academic listening and speaking, and project work.
Course Structure
The guidelines below show how long a ‘typical’ student may need to study, based on our English language teaching evidence. You may need to study for longer than the guidelines suggest. These guidelines are based on a student attending every class, participating actively in all tasks and studying independently outside the classroom as recommended by the teacher.
| To progress from | Recommended hours of tuition for a typical student | Cumulative Total |
| IELTS 4.0-4.5 | 140 hours | 340 hours |
| IELTS 4.5-5.0 | 140 hours | 480 hours |
| IELTS 5.0-5.5 | 200 hours | 680 hours |
| IELTS 5.5-6.0 | 200 hours | 880 hours |
| IELTS 6.0-6.5 | 240 hours | 1,120 hours |
These are only guidelines and should be used as a minimum for the target level of English. This will depend on the individual. All students are different and progress at different rates. It also depends on your current level of English.
You will have assessed homework and class tests for each block. If you are in a pre-intermediate or intermediate group you will have a mock IELTS test. Although we are not a testing centre we do have IELTS preparation classes and will advise you on taking the test in Manchester.
