Sport Rehabilitation

This prestigious course allows you to apply high-level academic and practical management skills to the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries arising from sport and physical activity. On completion, you will have the necessary skills to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal injuries in the physically active. You will also be eligible for membership of the British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) and benefit from the professional industry insight they provide.

You will attend a minimum of four one-month clinical placements at a sports injury clinic, professional sports club and a private practice. You will also have a placement under the direct supervision of a specialist orthopaedic consultant surgeon. These placements are organised for you by the University, giving you experience of a wide range of workplace environments.

Course details

You will study musculoskeletal injuries, therapeutic techniques and exercise rehabilitation skills, supported by a foundation in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and psychology.

You will learn how to help injured people get back to full sporting activity by applying cutting-edge rehabilitation techniques in a lively and supportive environment. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in real-life situations.

Year 1

Human Anatomy

Structure and function of the human body with special attention to an in-depth understanding of the musculoskeletal system.

Fundamentals of Exercise

Understanding basic principles of exercise prescription and strength and conditioning for sport.

Therapeutic Modalities

A practical and theoretical exploration of therapies including electrotherapy, massage, taping and strapping.

Musculoskeletal Conditions

Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the common pathological conditions that may arise from physical activity.

Human Physiology

A foundation in the physiology of healing and exercise.

Biomechanics

Biomechanical principles that underlies performance in sport with special reference to the mechanics of injury.

Year 2

Professional Practice 1

Experiential learning in our in-house sports injury clinic.

Manual Therapy

Gain competence in a range of orthopaedic treatments including joint manipulation and mobilisations.

Functional Rehabilitation

Understand the aims and principles of progressive rehabilitation for sport.

Aspects of Sports Science

A broader understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of sport rehabilitation including sports nutrition, sports psychology, and sports biomechanics.

Research Methods and Study Design

Understanding fundamentals of research as applied to evidence-based practice.

Year 3

Professional Practice 2

Experiential learning of an advanced nature with our partners from professional sports clubs, private clinics, and orthopaedic consultants around the UK.

Advanced Therapies

Gain competence in a range of advanced therapies including neuro-dynamics, complex rehabilitation and manual therapy.

Dissertation

A student-driven research project with a focus on future publication.
