If you wish to pursue a career as a social worker, then this professional degree is the nationally recognised qualification, validated by the General Social Care Council (GSCC). This course also involves input from service users and carers, including the Citizens as Trainers (CATS) group and external social work practitioners.
Social work is a demanding job which involves developing a range of academic and professional skills. Course details
This course is designed to educate and prepare you for your future career as a registered social worker. As a qualified social worker you will be required to investigate, analyse and evaluate new methods and new philosophies, as well as be able to respond to needs in a flexible and imaginative way.
The integrated teaching style is intended as a preparation for your future career in social work. We aim to inform, encourage, support and engage students, tutors and practice teachers in collaborative learning. We all bring our individual experience, values and ideas with us and we want to share and hear them.
The course includes practice learning throughout, which allows you to put your learning into practice in real-life situations.
Structure
Year one
Developing Professional Practice 1
This will introduce you to the role and responsibilities of social workers, the concepts of professionalism and developments in the social work profession.

Ethics and Values
Introduces you to key debates about ethics in society as they relate to the caring professions. This will enable you to develop a critical approach to social work and issues of power and oppression.

Law and Social Policy
Identify and appreciate the key law and social policy issues in relation to social work. Consider the impact of New Labour, the coalition government and international developments in terms of law.

Individual Development and Change
Develop critical analysis and examination of the ‘multiplicity of factors’ involved in understanding the complexity of individual development and change. This module seeks to make explicit the relevance of rigorous theoretical engagement and application within the practice and professional of social work.

Introduces a range of methods and interventions used in social work practice and the theoretical base that underpins them.

Introduces different ways of defining research problems with an understanding of the key theoretical principles of research.

Specialist Pathway Modules
You will have the opportunity to choose one from three discreet practice areas to explore in depth. The areas covered are children, families and young people, mental health and working with adults.

Demonstrates awareness of the value of working with other agencies, carers, service users and citizens. This module explores the challenges and benefits to multiagency working.

Specialist Pathway Research Project
Presentation of a well structured literature review in your chosen area. It will demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the literature in that chosen area and its application to social work practice.
