This course comprises 50% academic study and 50% practice learning in a social work/care workplace setting.

Year 1, Semester 1
Social Welfare and Social Work Practice (15 credits)
Provides you with an understanding of the location of social work within the UK welfare system and the role social workers play.

Social Construction of Identity (15 credits)
Provides you with knowledge on equality issues and the way in which identities are seen as social constructions.

Perspectives on Individual Development and Changes (15 credits)
Gain an understanding of how individuals internally make sense of their world.

Year 1, Semester 2
A Framework for Practice - Social Work Law (15 credits)
Provides a basic understanding of the major pieces of legislation which inform the conduct of social work.

A Framework for Practice - Social Work Theory and Methods (15 credits)
Considers how social workers can intervene in the lives of those accessing services and theories underpinning those interventions.

Inter-Professional Practice (15 credits)
covers ways in which different professional groups work together to provide services for people accessing social work/care.

Critical Professional Practice (20 credits)
100 day supervised placement in a social work/care setting in which you have the opportunity to learn and develop professional skills and practice knowledge.

Year 2, Semester 1
Applied Professional Practice (20 credits)
Gives you the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of work with children and families or adults. The module enables you to consider in detail relevant legislation and policy in your chosen area and factors concerning how assessments are conducted with people accessing social work/care services.

Year 2, Semester 2
Critiquing Knowledge Theory and Research (30 credits)
Explore and understand complexities in the knowledge base of social work and how evidence is produced.

Critical Professional Practice (20 credits)
Your second 100 day placement will give you the opportunity to further develop the practice knowledge and skills you achieved in the first placement.

Advanced Professional Practice (30 credits)
This is an independent piece of work in which you select an issues relation to your area of practice and complete an article for submission to a professional academic journal.
