This course is delivered over three semesters per year. Throughout this course theory and practice are integrated into each module.
You will acquire the essential knowledge, skills and professional attitudes needed to meet the needs of the users, carers and significant others. You will develop knowledge of concepts of health, public health and health promotion including an awareness of factors affecting health within a diverse and multi-cultural society. You will do this through the development of knowledge and the fundamental skills required for all nurses and within your chosen field of practice.
You will apply essential knowledge, skills and the professional attitudes needed to deliver and promote holistic care of mental and physical health across the life span by analysing decision-making, problem solving and prioritising skills in nursing practice.
You will prepare for the transition from student nurse to qualified professional nurse both professionally and autonomously in order to manage yourself and others effectively. You will be able to develop practice using the best available evidence that incorporates both nursing expertise and knowledge, together with that of the patient/service user.
Year 1
Three Core Modules:
Foundations of Nursing Knowledge and Practice
The module will focus on the professional values, communication and interpersonal skills required of all nurses. You will acquire the essential skills and professional attitudes required to meet the needs of users, carers and others.

Nursing and Health
Within this module you will develop your knowledge of the concepts of health, public health and health promotion including an awareness of the factors impacting on the health of individuals and groups within a diverse and multi-cultural society.

Introduction to the Field of Practice (Mental Health)
You will gain the essential knowledge and develop the fundamental skills required to care for those experiencing mental health problems and their families from a bio-psycho-social perspective.

Two Core Modules:
Mental and Physical Health and Well Being across the Lifespan
You will apply essential knowledge, skills and the professional attitudes needed to deliver and promote the holistic care of mental and physical health across the life span within various care settings.

Nursing Practice and Decision Making (Mental Health)
You will explore the specific knowledge, skills and attributes required to deliver care to those experiencing mental health problems in a variety of practice settings and analyse decision making, problem solving and prioritising skills in nursing practice.

Preparation for Role Transition
This module will facilitate the development of the evidenced knowledge, skills and values essential for the transition from student nurse to qualified professional nurse.

Within this module you will develop your practice using the best available evidence that incorporates both nursing expertise and knowledge, together with that of the patient/child/young person/service user.

Preparation for Professional Practice (Mental Health)
This module will enable you to achieve the standards for competency to be eligible to register as a mental health nurse and to engage with the process of transition from student to registered practitioner.
