A good honours degree (2:1 or above) in a relevant field. Those applicants not in possession of these entry requirements, but who have amassed practical experience in the cultural and creative sectors, will be considered for entry in line with the University’s APL procedure.

Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

English Language Requirements

A minimum IELTS score of 7.0 will also be required for non-native English language speakers.

Suitable For

The MRes in Music offers opportunities applicants from a range of backgrounds.

You may be about to graduate and wish to develop higher level research and practice knowledge and skills with a view to giving yourself a lead in the job market.

Your goal may be to undertake PhD research, for which the MRes in Music is ideal preparation.

You may be currently employed in the Music profession and are keen to enhance your promotion prospects or enter a new field of work in the profession.

Applicant profile

You will be a well-organised, strongly motivated individual with a keen interest in investigating phenomena in Music and reporting on them clearly and in detail at a high level.  

You will either have a strong academic background demonstrated through the attainment of a good undergraduate research degree, or you will possess considerable experience of working in a field related to Music.   

You will be an excellent communicator with a passion for the study of Music in its many facets.   

You will possess an ambitious and progressive outlook and will be keen to acquire the high level research and practice skills and subject knowledge to take your academic and career development forward in Music.
