This course is aimed at all health care professionals who want to develop the knowledge, skills and qualities to be an effective health care lead within an international healthcare context. This leadership and management course is designed to give you the confidence to study and explore creative approaches to healthcare leadership and management, deal with complex leadership situations and provide effective patient and service outcomes.

Exploring the Complexities of Managing and Leading in an International Hospital and Health Services Context (30 credits)

You will be able to explore the social, political and historical factors shaping international hospital and health service provision and your organisation and the context within which you work. Areas covered include "what is leadership?" as well as theories of leadership and management including governance, strategic management and stakeholder engagement.

Year 1, Semester 1

Health Economics and Decision Making

Managing and Leading Public Health and Health Promotion

Improving Quality and Safety through Effective use of Information

A minimum of two optional modules will be delivered per year

Year 1, Semester 2

Influencing Organisational Behaviour in an International Hospital and Health Service Context (30 credits)

Understand yourself as a leader and improve your personal leadership knowledge, skills and qualities. Examine some of the key concepts and problems associated with the management of behaviour in international hospital and health service organisations. This module covers areas such as leadership and management approaches, narrative analysis, emotional intelligence and effective leadership.

Improving Quality and Safety through Effective use of Information

A minimum of two optional modules will be delivered per year

Year 1, Semester 3

Project Management and Impact Evaluation on Hospital and Health Services Outcomes for Patient and/or Service Improvement Module (60 credits)

This gives you the opportunity to plan and or implement a change and define how international hospital and health service outcomes for patient and/or service improvement can be measured.

International Hospital and Health Service Human Resource Management

Explore strategies that support managing people, including managing performance and providing direction for people who work in international hospital and health service organisations. Understand the concept of the learning organisation.

Health Economics and Decision Making

Understand the principles of health economic techniques to support international hospital and health service care delivery and shape health care reform. Explore the links between efficiency, equity and the decision making process; this includes employing appropriate financial strategies.

Improving Quality and Safety through Effective use of Information

Explore the ways in which information and communication technologies may be used to support patient care and service delivery, health and social care management and research from an international hospital and health service context.

Managing and Leading Public Health and Health Promotion

Explore principles that can improve the health of international communities, including the range of health interventions.
