A variety of delivery methods are adopted to achieve the intended learning outcomes:

  • Research methods are developed with assignments, a specific module on research methods and an independent project.
  • Projects and assignments enable students to: (a) apply what they have learned to a realistic problem; (b) develop independent learning skills; (c) demonstrate an ability make decisions in uncertain situations; and (d) develop their ability to compare and contrast alternative technologies.
  • Group work is used to develop team working and professional skills.
  • Practical modules include supervised laboratories, as well as lectures.
  • The issue of ethics is explicitly covered in the "Research Methods" module, using speakers from the British Computer Society and considering the University's code of practice on ethics. Students are required to identify and address ethical issues as part of their research-based project.
  • The issue of professionalism is addressed throughout the course, in the research methods module and through the student's project. Students are required to critically evaluate case studies, as well as reflect on their own project performance.
  • Key skills are developed throughout the programme and formally listed in module specifications.
