Frequent news stories indicate that important systems are being compromised with alarming frequency. Recent (UK) legislation, including the Data Protection Act, the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, and the BS7799 standard on Information Security Management (now ISO27001) are forcing companies to take information security more seriously.

Information security requires a clear understanding of relevant technological issues and of the social/organisational issues, as well as the relationships between them.

This course covers these concerns by offering modules that cover security technologies, incident response and digital investigations, network security implementations as well as information security from a management perspective.

This course has the support of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) Northern Chapter to ensure the curriculum is relevant to the changing needs of the Information Security industries and professions.

Course details

This course aims:

to provide you with the knowledge necessary to succeed in an information security implementation role and to be able to make decisions regarding the adoption and implementation of information security related technologies, policies and practices in complex and unpredictable situations
to develop your understanding of the context of information security in organisations and the ways in which technologies may be applied in ensuring the security of information systems in an organisational context
to develop the your ability to function as a reflective information security practitioner, capable of critically evaluating your own practice as a professional, maintaining a critical awareness of current issues in information security, and maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of information security related technologies
to provide you with the opportunity to develop your conceptual thinking

Semester One

Information Security Management (30 credits)

The module aims to prepare you for the creation and implementation of information security policies in organisations, with an emphasis on risk management and business continuity planning, taking account both of the practicalities of implementation in a real-world setting, and the various legal and ethical issues involved.

Information Security Technologies (30 credits)

The module aims to give you a solid understanding of the principle technologies for managing security (confidentiality, integrity and availability) of information systems, their roles and relevance, and how they are used.

Semester 2

Information Security in Practice (30 credits)

The module aims to give you a solid understanding of the threats to information security, the technologies used to detect and combat them, the techniques and tools used to manage and investigate incidents, and the relevance of these technologies within a total information security management context, with due consideration of the legal and ethical aspects of security monitoring, control and investigation. You will gain practice in defending servers from systematic attack, penetration testing, and digital investigation.

Research Methods, Development and Project Management (30 credits)

You will study the principles and practices of effective project management and their application within technology based business environments. The module will involve the study of business and management issues and problems faced by data communication practitioners. You will enhance your ability to engage in independent or team project activities within development and/or research environments. You cover the required skills to develop and undertake research projects, to ensure you are prepared for you MSc Project and Dissertation.
