Industrial and Commercial Combustion Engineering

This module will give you a detailed knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, fuel composition and combustion theory and how they apply to industrial and commercial combustion engineering processes.

You will cover the following topics:

• Fluid dynamics: fluid properties, ideal gases, hydrostatics, real gases, fluid flow and turbulence.
• Organic chemistry: chemical terms, chemical bonding and organic chemistry.
• Thermodynamics: thermodynamic properties and laws, thermodynamic processes
• Manufactured gases: gas families, gas characteristics, gas transmission, fuel-interchangeability
• Combustion: types of flame (pre-mixed, partially mixed, diffusion flame), flame velocity, flammability limits, stoichiometry, atomisation, spray evaporation, products of combustion, ignition, flame stabilisation

You will learn about gas and oil burner design for a variety of industrial and commercial combustion processes along with factors that affect burner design, operation and performance.

You will cover the following topics:

• Burner types: non aerated, partially aerated, fully aerated and other burner systems characteristics and design.
• Burner design: air entrainment, port/orifice sizing, factors effecting burner design and burner stability.
• Burner performance: factors affecting burner performance and burner emissions.
• Fuel types: burner design considerations when using various fuels: gas, oil, wood and coal.
• Burner ignition: flame supervision devices and Ignition systems.

This module will give you a detailed understanding of burner/boiler utilisation within industrial and commercial combustion processes (space heating, hot water supply, drying, catering, metal heating and CHP) and be able to analyse, calculate and design suitable systems.

You will cover the following topics:

• Heat transfer: conduction, convection, radiation, applications related to furnaces, pipework, buildings and boilers
• Heat exchangers: double pipe heat exchanger, shell and tube heat exchanger cross flow heat exchanger and heat exchanger design.
• Hot water supply : supply laws, types of hot water supply
• Boilers: sectional, modular, finned, condensing, steam boilers, boiler sizing and design.
• Space heating: wet systems, radiant, convective and operation of space heating.
• Drying: mechanisms of drying, selecting a drying method.

This module explores process control, electronics and gas flow monitoring systems with particular emphasis on burner control and the design of suitable burner control systems.

You will cover the following topics:

• Electricity: magnetism, electromagnetism, D.C theory and common electrical components.
• AC theory: generation of electricity, AC theory, motor and fan technology, electrical safety, earthing systems, tools used to analyse electrical installations.
• Control theory: closed loop control, proportional, integral, derivative, automatic control, control inputs, programmable logic controllers, computer controlled and data logging.

In this module you will study the safety and environmental legislation for the safe installation and utilisation of industrial/commercial burners.

You will cover the following topics:

• Safety legislation: Regulations\ acts, and British Standards.
• Unsafe situations procedure: Understand, identify and respond to: Immediately dangerous, at risk and not to current standard scenarios.
• LPG and LNG: properties, uses and safe storage and handling
• Explosions and the Prevention of Hazardous Situations: Types of explosions, causes of explosions, ventilation and prevention, safety analysis tools (Hazop)

On completion of this module you will have a critical knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of fluid flow within pipes, pipework legislation and the planning requirements for the installation of pipework for industrial and commercial burner applications.

Topics covered are:

• Flow through pipework: laminar and turbulent flow, dynamics of pipeline flow, pipe work planning and design.
• Pipework installation: legal considerations, piping materials, jointing methods, connectors, sizing pipework.
• Gas pipework components: gas metering, valves, governors, safety components, gas/air regulation, ancillary pipework components.

In this module you will study the burner commissioning process, along with associated legislation for the setup, commissioning and final burner process handover to the plant operator.

Topics covered are:

• Flue systems: legislation, types of flue, installation of flues, sizing a flue
• Burner commissioning: commissioning procedure, personnel, planning programming period, Inspection period, Activation and Operation, Strength testing, Testing for Soundness, Purging.
• Steam systems: Properties of steam, Steam utilisation, Components of a steam system. Commissioning a steam system.

In this module you will critically evaluate burner/process optimisation and fault finding methodology for Industrial and Commercial processes.

Topics covered are:

• Fault finding procedure: gas analysis equipment, assessment of burner firing rate, fault finding equipment, common faults, fault finding procedures, service and maintenance of components
• Emission Reduction: alternative fuels, emission reduction methods, converting burners from oil to gas
• Energy efficiency: combined heat and power, matching burners to processors, electrical power consumption, heat recovery methods, modulating burners, boiler technology.

To complete this module, which will give you the full MSc qualification you will need to write a 15,000 word dissertation in Industrial and commercial Combustion Engineering which can be a project related to your current role in industry.  This can be in the form of either experimental or theoretically based research.
