A career in hospitality management offers opportunities all over the world. This degree prepares you by covering food and beverage management, accommodation management, food science and business studies. You can develop technical knowledge and skills within our excellent facilities, which include production kitchens, a training restaurant and specialist food laboratories.

This course seeks to develop communication, IT, numeracy and team building skills. It meets the educational requirement towards a grade of Hotel and Catering International Management Association membership.

Overseas study is available and you can spend up to a year studying at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, Canada or studying at one of our partner institutions across Europe, including destinations such as Vichy, France, and Tampere and Helsinki, Finland, all of which offer taught courses in English.

In addition you can study a language for credit via the University-wide language course and can choose to study Finnish on the Languages For All course, to prepare for an international exchange.

Course details

Hospitality Management as an industry balances the operational and functional areas of food and beverage management, lodgings management, and food science as well as business and management studies. You will also develop skills in the areas of communication, information technology, numeracy and team building.

During this course you can apply for a one-year Professional Placement Year. Salford graduates who have completed a placement have higher marks than average and much better employment prospects. All one-year placement positions are paid and many of our students return to their placement company when they finish the course.

In addition there is also the opportunity to study abroad in Canada, Finland, France and Spain. Teaching is primarily in English and all EU exchanges are eligible to receive Erasmus grants.

Course Structure


Year 2

In year 2 you will gain professional work experience. This is further underpinned by relevant theoretical considerations relating to the hospitality industry.

Year 3

Optional Year

On completion of year 2 you may choose to undertake either a Paid Placement, or study abroad for a year. If you choose to study abroad you will spend your academic year at one of our partner universities, enhancing your language skills and international business knowledge.
