This module will enable you to explore the theme of the monstrous in a range of Gothic texts and their film adaptations. You’ll be introduced to a host of connected issues such as the emergence of psychoanalysis, criminality, deviance and transgression, the supernatural and the apparitional. The course will invite you to offer your critical responses to topics such as the uncanny; the connection between monstrosity and revolution; the double; the body and desire, and many other fascinating areas.
This course can be studied alone or as part of the MA Literature, Culture and Modernity.
