This course builds on the strong reputation of the success and expertise of staff in the school. It is designed around block delivery and the ‘virtual studio’ and a strong interdisciplinary ethos.

The course will enable you to develop your knowledge and understanding of fashion design to a high level and enable you to achieve an advanced, professional ability in identifying comprehensive and complex concepts in fashion design and proposing innovative responses and/or solutions.

The intensive block delivery will give you the opportunity to engage with a range of expert lecturers, tutors and industry specialists and to work in an interdisciplinary way with students from other pathways on the Fashion Innovation course.

Course details

MA/PgDip Fashion Innovation: Design develops students as expert professional practitioners and creative and critical thinkers in the context of fashion. Graduates from the course will be able to respond to emerging demands and developments and to lead innovation in the sector. The course aims to:

Develop advanced, critical understanding of research methods in the context of fashion and to understand how the boundaries of knowledge are advanced through research
Establish an environment where learners can explore and deepen their understanding of fashion innovation, particularly through the course’s online virtual studio
Develop an advanced knowledge of the relevant past, present and/or future practices in fashion, with an advanced understanding of key concepts in the context of culture, creativity and innovation
Critically explore at an advanced level the interdisciplinary practice of fashion and the development of new concepts, emerging methodologies, ethical practices, sustainability and commercial strategies
Establish intellectual debate and make original propositions in the context of fashion and the way in which these can be articulated and disseminated

The course consists of three 60 credit modules, each of which is contained within a semester. The modules will be delivered through blended learning with an intensive block of delivery over six - seven days at MediaCityUK and other appropriate venues, supported through the virtual studio.

Fashion Thinking and Networked Culture (60 credits)

This module enables you to identify your place in the context of the contemporary networked fashion industry. The module establishes core research methods and activities in order to allow you to develop an individual approach to your postgraduate studies in parallel with peer-to-peer collaboration. You will be challenged to consider the future of fashion and to explore concepts that are shaping fashion by considering the needs, values and aspirations of emerging and established audiences, and the relationships between the two.

Fashion Innovation and Direction (60 credits)

This module facilitates the articulation, development and realisation of a conceptual proposition related to the notion of innovation in fashion. Through a process of research, debate and experimentation, you will cultivate and evaluate your ideas and the direction of your study. You will be encouraged to work both collaboratively and independently, as appropriate to your concept, in order to reflect on contemporary practices and processes.

Fashion Intervention (60 credits)

The purpose of this module is to provide you with the opportunity to research, develop and produce an appropriate intervention framed by emerging and complex issues at the intersection of fashion disciplines and beyond. Interventions are driven by notions of trans-disciplinary thinking, innovation and change. Complex responses are encouraged; the module aims to produce leading thinkers and practitioners who challenge what fashion is.
