This course is designed as a preliminary year during which you will develop your skills so that you can continue into the first year of one of the BA/BSc (Hons) degree courses in environment, geography or wildlife.

It is ideal if you don't meet the entry requirements for direct entry, but still wish to study for an Honours degree. The course is also attractive if you are a mature person returning to higher education or if you wish to change career direction.

Course details

During the Environmental Studies Foundation Year you will study modules which help increase your knowledge and understanding of the social and natural sciences necessary for understanding contemporary environmental issues. There are four themes running through the course: Earth Processes; Environmental Issues; Environmental Biology; and Nature and Society. Additionally, study skills modules will develop your ability to take notes, structure essays and write reports.

The course also aims to develop your numeracy skills, IT skills and to enhance your communication and presentation skills. Regular opportunities will be provided for you to practice and enhance these skills.

Year 1

Environment and Society (20 credits)

This module examines the relationship between the social and natural worlds, and the application of social science concepts, paradigms and techniques to the study of the environment.

Environmental Biology (20 credits)

This module aims to encourage an awareness of living organisms and their varied habitats, and the diversity and variety of animal and plant life.

Earth Studies (20 credits)

This module introduces key earth and environmental processes and functions.

Environmental Issues (20 credits)

Learn about a range of environmental issues; debate and discuss key topics and current environmental challenges.

Personal and Academic Development (20 credits)

This module will help you achieve the academic skills needed for study at Honours degree level.

Data Handling (20 credits)

This module aims to provide an understanding of fundamental mathematical techniques, eg, in basic arithmetic, algebra and trigonometry, basic statistical methods and to develop your capability in the use of ICT.
