Creative Writing: Playwriting

This is a unique opportunity to learn from three of the UK’s leading theatres: the Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester, the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and the Octagon Theatre Bolton. You will spend 50% of your time studying at these theatres, receiving a unique insight into how theatres run and how a professional playwright works in the industry. You will receive tuition and advice from a professional playwright (to be appointed on a yearly basis by the theatres) and will leave the course equipped to work as a professional playwright and having had the opportunity to write several pieces of work during your time on the course.

Course details

Semester 1

Professional Context

This module will be taught at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and Octagon Theatre Bolton. You will leave this module with a full understanding of how theatres run and how a professional playwright works in the theatre industry.

Writing Workshop

A series of workshops at the University of Salford in which you share your own creative projects with fellow students and a writing tutor. Work will be submitted regularly in advance to the group and the tutors, who will undertake detailed preparation for the workshops, including annotating students' material. This workshop provides a context for an on-going creative exploration of how theoretical ideas can influence and inform creative practice.

Semester 2

Production Context

This module will be taught by the Royal Exchange Theatre, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and Octagon Theatre Bolton. You will receive a full understanding of how to write for specific stages, audiences and commissions.

Literature in the Academic and Cultural World

This module, taught at the University of Salford, deals with the public and academic aspects of the literary arts, including topics such as:

The public value of the arts
Marketing, publishing and networking
Writing a research proposal
Effective oral presentations

Semester 3

Dissertation: Creative Project

This will be an opportunity for you to concentrate on writing a finished full length play, using the skills you have learnt on the course.
