Graduate Certificate
Counselling
3 good reasons to study Counselling at Salford:
- A strong professional team of academic staff who also work as counsellors and psychotherapists
- Mixture of counselling theory, skills and personal development
- Can lead to professional counsellor training
This qualification is invaluable to those working in an environment where employees have a 'helping' or 'caring' role, such as those working in education, the health service, social services or the voluntary sector. You will be provided with the theory, practical skills and development which are consistent with the person-centred approach to counselling. You will undertake skills practice in pairs and in small groups and develop self awareness.
Course details
This course provides a solid introduction to counselling skills and will be particularly relevant to graduates already working in areas such as education, health, social services and the voluntary sector.
A typical session at the University will have tutors introducing aspects of counselling theory or modelling particular skills. You will then have a chance to practice these skills with each other, either in pairs or small groups, often using audio equipment to record and review your work. These sessions provide an opportunity for you to develop an understanding of counselling theory and to put that theory into practice under the direction of skilled practitioners. We also encourage you to apply psychological principles to your own experience and consequently gain more insight into yourself. There is ample opportunity to learn from interactions with other students through the personal growth groups.
