Business Management with Sport

This course provides an academically challenging and vocationally relevant business education with the added benefit of an understanding of the issues facing sports organisations.

You will become an adaptable person who recognises the need for change and who can act as an agent for change through an understanding of the inter- relationships which exist within the Sport Management field. You will learn to appreciate the concepts and characteristics of Sport Management as an area of academic and applied study.

It will develop your ability to learn independently in order to facilitate professional development throughout a career in Sport Management, more wide-ranging management roles, or to enable you to take a place on a post graduate programme.

Course details

Level 4

Principles of Accounting

The aim of the module is to provide you with a theoretical and practical introduction to accounting. It will help you understand the fundamentals of basic accounting methods and introduce you to the production of financial statements for decision makers in various organisational structures.

Principles of HRM

This module will provide an insight into the distinct contribution of human resource management policy and practice to employee and organisational performance and success within a UK and international comparative context. It will help you develop an understanding of the interrelationship between the dynamic nature of social relationships within a range of organisations, the broader external environment, and the effective management of human resources and employment relations.

Principles of Marketing

This module aims to provide an introduction to key foundational aspects of the theory and practice of marketing, which are essential to the long term prosperity of organisations and applicable to all specialisations within business. It will enable you to apply marketing principles to real life marketing situations.

Principles of Economics

The aim of this module is to introduce you to key concepts in modern economics, in particular the functioning of markets as the foundation of contemporary economies. It will present an overview of the main microeconomic principles of economic behaviour and the main concepts within macroeconomics, and to explore the relationship between these microeconomic principles and macroeconomic concepts.

Business Statistics

This module enables you to present, evaluate and interpret quantitative data in order to develop a capacity for making business decisions. It will introduce you to the mathematical prerequisites for developing lines of argument and making sound judgements It will help you to develop an awareness of established mathematical and statistical techniques to initiate and undertake critical analysis of information and propose appropriate solutions to business problems.

Level 4 Pathway Options – Choose one of two

Sports Development (option)

Key content will be delivered via participative lectures. Seminar discussions will explore the role and effect of policy-making on various user groups in society. Your learning will be supported by the use of the University virtual learning environment. Guest speakers will be used to support targeted areas of the syllabus.

Language

This module further consolidates and develops your knowledge of and competence in a foreign language, within the general context of the countries where it is spoken, and more specifically for professional purposes. It further prepares you linguistically and inter-culturally for work in or relating to a country where the target language is spoken.

Level 5

Professional Development

Building on the embedded skills developed during level 4 of the course the module enables you to plan and carry out appropriate professional development activities to increase employability and performance, including self presentation, professional networking, project planning and implementation, team working, influencing and multimedia communication. The module aims to equip you with the experience required to position yourself in the global employment marketplace.

Sport Psychology

This module provides an introduction to the study of sport psychology and focuses on using knowledge in an applied setting, via examination of the following aspects:

The relationship between individual psychological differences and participation in sport
Coaching and leadership theory; coaching styles; athlete preferences
Psychological assessment in athletes
Mental training and the use of psychological techniques in improving athlete performance
Athlete behaviour in team sport situations
The home-field advantage phenomenon.

Project Management

This module will help you to develop knowledge and critical understanding of the principles of effective project management within a global business context and the ways in which these principles have developed. It will help to facilitate an understanding of project management skills techniques, methods and tools and their application and limitations.

Law in a Business Context

This module introduces you to the operation of legal systems in the global business context and the areas of law that underpin the practice of effective business management. You will develop a working knowledge of the law relating to contracts in different business contexts and their effective negotiation.

Event Planning and Development

This module provides you with a course of study in the successful delivery of an event and the impact of events, enabling you to problem solve within the context of event preparation, execution and post evaluation. It allows you to critically evaluate your performance and contribution to events delivery with reference to the global market. It will also enable you to successfully execute the theoretical aspects of the course within a real situation, allowing you to develop your project management skills.

Sport Leadership

This module examines the legal, ethical and practical considerations in sports leadership. There is an emphasis on the development of young athletes and the pivotal role of coaches and sports leaders in young people’s personal development. The module also offers opportunities to develop your capacity for leadership.

Business Management with Sport with Professional Placement Year students only:

Professional Placement Year

The Professional Experience Year is a required part of all courses ‘with Professional Experience’. Such courses therefore are made up of three taught years, and one year developing practical experience, knowledge and skills in work relevant to your degree. All students are encouraged to take part in this 12 month period of professional experience: students registered on the three year course may transfer to the four year course upon securing an approved position.

You conduct the year under the supervision of both the host organisation and the Business School. It gives you the opportunity to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding gained in your course in a real working environment, and thus makes a substantial contribution to your employability.

You apply for these positions while undertaking your second year (ie level 5). Placements can be arranged in a large variety of organisations, including those involved in the public, private and not for profit sector. These will range from multinationals to SMEs and may be located in the UK or overseas on condition that employer’s liability insurance cover is provided. Following discussion with the module leader and where the School has approved the business case, students may devote the year to establishing their own business.

Level 6

Business Ethics and Sustainability

This module equips you with an appreciation and in-depth understanding of the implications of Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability within national and international organisations. This module will also develop your knowledge with respect to the importance of the balance between shareholders, stakeholders and the purpose and values of the organisation. It will explore the roles of social and technological innovation in global ethical organisations in order to prepare you for future employability.

Applied Business Research and Analysis

This module aims to develop your understanding of the secondary sources and primary research methodologies available to solve business problems. In particular, it aims to develop the knowledge and skills required to evaluate published business research and consultancy in relation to its methodology and findings and to prepare viable proposals for future research/consultancy.

Strategic Management

You will acquire an organisation-wide perspective through exploring strategy techniques and processes within the global environment. The module prepares you for a career in business and management and to develop the next generation manager. It allows you to apply the knowledge and understanding of strategy to a variety of real-world organisations and helps your ability to deploy accurately established techniques of analysis and enquiry, some of which are at the forefront of strategic research and practice.

Service Sector Entrepreneurship

This module provides you with a course of study in entrepreneurship, business risk analysis, legislation ethics and social responsibility in small business development. It enables you to understand the different motivational aspects of entrepreneurship behaviour, and generate creative service business ideas/concepts, feasibility, proposals, business plan to meet the differing needs in domestic and international context. It allows you to critically evaluate environmental, operational and strategic factors involved in the set up of a service business.

Sport and Social Issues

This module explores the relationship between sport and society by examining issues (like corruption, drugs, gambling and racism in sport) which connect sport and sports organisations to the ethical, legal, political and social environments within which they function.

Level 6 Pathway Option (Semester 2) – Choose one

Services and Relationship Marketing

This module enables you to understand the nature of services within the business environment. It develops a detailed understanding of the marketing process adopted by a range of public and private sector service organisations. The module also develops an understanding of relationship marketing and how it contributes to the effectiveness of service organisations whether it be business to customer or business to business.

Language

This module will help you develop your listening, speaking and reading skills in the target language. You will develop the ability to use the language for practical everyday needs and will be able to write using a basic written language. The module introduces you to the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
