Business and Management Studies

This course is designed to equip you with the business knowledge and skills needed in today’s global economy and provides a general business education that will prepare students for a wide variety of managerial careers.

It will prepare you for a variety of employment opportunities in major areas of business. A carefully designed and employer-supported management development programme runs through the first two years of your degree.

This suite of courses allows you to specialise in one of seven distinct streams or to follow the integrated course. All business and management students study the same modules in the first year of the course. Final year modules are different according to your selected stream.

Course details

Structure

This course allows you to either specialise or follow an integrated programme and the modular design gives you considerable choice.

YEAR 2

The second year focus is on the management of business operations and functional areas; this will develop and deepen your understanding of the subjects in which you choose to specialise. You will take modules relating to core areas of management and continue to enhance your management skills as the programme unfolds. You may also continue to study a language.

Financial Planning and Control

Building on the year 1 Accounting module, this module develops your understanding of how accounting information can be used by management to plan and control the activities of the organisation. It also gives an appreciation of other uses of accounting information, including an introduction to the Stock Exchange and the City, and the audit process.

Management Development Programme II

This module extends the learning in the first year of the programme with further focus on personal and career development.

Principles of Marketing

The module introduces you to the principles of marketing in a business and management context, focusing on the role of marketing within the organisation and its interaction with other business functions. The module also helps you to develop practical marketing abilities.

YEAR 2 ELECTIVES

Quantitative and Statistical Analysis

You will examine the relevant mathematical aspects of economic analysis that are important for a full appreciation of analytical and quantitative economics.

Organisational Behaviour

This module will develop a wide-ranging analysis and understanding of the behaviour of people at work as well as the dynamics of work organisations.

Operations Management I

This module will review the relevant techniques for the analysis and management of business operations, with particular reference to the manufacturing industry. It will also introduce the concept of systems analysis and its relevance to manufacturing, supply, transport and service operations. The module will also examine OM at the tactical level.

Language Option

You may continue to study a language.

OPTIONAL YEAR

On completion of year 2 you may choose to undertake either a paid placement, or study abroad for a year. If you choose to study abroad you will spend your academic year at one of our partner universities, enhancing your language skills and international business knowledge.

YEAR 3

You can confirm your original choice of degree or change to any of the other degrees in the suite. You may wish to study a range of modules covering a number of major management functions.

Corporate Strategy

In this module you will acquire an organisation-wide perspective through exploring strategic planning and processes, and learn to relate strategic models and theories to the real world of organisational success and failure. You will develop your analytical and evaluative skills through problem/case analysis and develop your team working and problem-solving skills to evaluate objectively your peers’ performance.

Management Simulation OR Management Practice and Research: Dissertation (choose 1 of the 2 following options)

Management Simulation

This module develops your ability to implement, review and appraise business strategy, objectives and management decisions within the context of a dynamic, competitive market environment. You will develop understanding of the complex interactions that characterise decision-making in organisations, and consequently the importance of thinking beyond a single functional perspective. You will also develop your understanding of the nature and use of planning in dynamic business environments and improve your employability through experience of real-time business decision-making in a simulated environment.

The following module is only available to students who have taken the Industrial placement year:

Management Practice and Research: Dissertation

You will identify and focus on a specialist area of research related to an aspect of your degree course; execute a substantial piece of independent research and produce a scholarly and critical dissertation.

YEAR 3 ELECTIVES

Choose four from:

Advanced Business Law

The module aims to examine the substantive law within a range of specialist legal obligations arising in a business context; and to develop your skills of negotiation, drafting and interpretation. You will also review the impact of EU law on business obligations.

Business Ethics

The module aims to raise awareness of the ethical dimensions of, and changing societal pressures on, businesses and other organisations; and develop your ability to reflect upon your own learning and understanding of ethics. You will learn to argue without prejudice or bias for particular ethical or value standpoints relevant to businesses or organisations.

Business Information Technology

You will gain more advanced business-related and business relevant IT skills; learn about IT-related issues currently affecting business organisations and gain an understanding of current and possible future developments in e-commerce.

Financial Reporting

You will learn to evaluate and apply the UK and international regulatory framework of financial reporting; prepare financial statements of limited companies and analyse and evaluate financial statements.

You may choose either HRM or International HRM but not both:

Human Resource Management (HRM)

You will learn to understand the theory and concepts in the field of HRM and its importance to the strategic and operational effectiveness of organisations; and to analyse rigorously the HRM implications of the change process in a number of contemporary work and employment areas. You will be able to evaluate critically the limitations and strengths of HRM theories, policies and strategies; and to define, discuss and appraise the principles and practice of HRM in an international context, and the broad framework of global competition and organisational change.

International Human Resource Management

You will gain an understanding of HRM in an international context and be able to analyse the principal characteristics of HRM in a selected number of countries. You will examine the impact of globalisation on international human resource management, strategy and policy; and evaluate the strategic and operational issues concerning assignment, development and remuneration in multinational corporations.

Integrated Marketing Communications

You will learn to identify the major challenges involved in developing marketing strategies in domestic and international markets. You will analyse the main channels of communication both in the domestic and international environment; examine the major communication media taking into account the limitations and restrictions both domestically and internationally; and analyse the major stages involved in developing integrated communication plans.

Intellectual Property Law

In this module you will examine the substantive law within a range of scenarios involving IPR in a business context. You will develop your skills of negotiation, problem solving and interpretation of complex legal documents and review the impact of global legal and commercial influences on the protection and exploitation of IPR.

International Business

This module will enable you to understand the nature of international business, the international business environment and their inter-relationships; and understand the relevant concepts and theories of international trade, investment and internationalisation of business.

Management Accounting Techniques

Provides an opportunity to apply management accounting techniques to business problems, with an emphasis on practical problem solving to complement the theoretical coverage on the year 2 modules Financial Planning and Control.

Operations Management 2 (OM)

You will learn to apply OM concepts and methodologies to manufacturing or service situations and consider the pros and cons of each technique studied. You will select appropriate criteria and measures to formulate basic OM decisions; and develop competence and skill in the management of an operation. You will also learn to interpret the output of statistical analysis and discuss and understand current OM issues such as IT, technology and Supply Chain Management.

Services and Relationships Marketing

In this module you will develop a detailed understanding of the marketing management process adopted by a range of public and private sector service organisations; and examine the relationship between strategic and operational marketing management, and the marketing planning process specifically for service organisations. You will develop an understanding of the management of the extended marketing ‘mix’ – product, price, distribution, promotion, physical evidence, people and process as they relate to service organisations; and explore current issues which impact (or have the potential to impact) on the practice of marketing management in service industries.
