Biology Foundation Year

The Biology Foundation Year is designed to bring you up to speed so that you can continue onto the first year of one of the science BSc (Hons) degree courses.

It is ideal if you want to change to one of these areas but have a non-scientific background, or you don't meet the entry requirements for direct entry to an Honours degree.

This course is also attractive if you are a mature person returning to education or if you wish to change career direction.

Course details

During the Biology Foundation Year you will study modules which will help you to increase your knowledge and understanding of basic biology and other aspects of science. Other modules will help to develop your study skills such as note taking and structuring essays and reports. In the second semester, you will develop your IT and computer skills and enhance your presentation skills.

Year one

Foundation Biology I (How cells work) (20 credits)

This module aims to provide basic information on the biology of cellular systems studies from structural, functional and biochemical perspectives (for example respiration and photosynthesis). You will learn to appreciate the general features of the biology of cells within the framework of their interaction with the micro and macro environment.

Foundation Biology II (How organisms work) (20 credits)

This module aims to encourage an awareness of living organisms and their varied habitats, to develop an understanding of the diversity and variety of animal and plant life. A whole range of animals (from invertebrates to vertebrates and plants (lower to higher) will be used for illustration purposes.

Chemistry I (20 credits)

This module will provide you with a general introduction to:

Atomic structure and bonding
Writing formulae and equations
Stoichiometry and molar calculations
Fundamental organic chemistry
Laboratory practices and techniques
Writing lab reports

Chemistry II (20 credits)

This module aims to provide you with a basic understanding of acid/base and redox reactions and an introduction to organic chemistry.

Data Handling (20 credits)

This module aims to provide an understanding of fundamental mathematical techniques; basic arithmetic, algebra and trigonometry, basic statistical methods. It will also develop your capability in the use of ICT.

Personal and Academic Development (20 credits)

This module will help you achieve the academic skills needed for with study at Honours degree level.
