This course addresses the rapid increase in need for new product innovation, which has arisen from prevailing global challenges and opportunities. These challenges are being driven by significant scales of change in market, societal and technological factors. All of which are characterised by an urgent requirement for sustainable progress.

You shall be introduced to a model of innovation practice which is based on global best practice in the field of product innovation. A range of market scenarios shall be explored encompassing commercial and social scenarios. Your theme of research enquiry innovation practice shall align the coursework toward your personal aspirations and interests.

Course details

This course embraces a range and diversity of practices and aims to:

  • Develop creative, critical, analytical and intellectual competencies appropriate to Masters degree level study, and informed by contemporary professional practice
  • Develop advanced understanding of research methods in general and those of importance to creative practice and industry in particular
  • Demonstrate critical reflective writing to enable the identification and evaluation of work based learning or experience based learning and value and accredit the knowledge and skills gained through prior work/experience based learning
  • Enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of professional and collaborative frameworks appropriate to their individual experiences and objectives, and offer guidance, supervision and support in the development of advanced creative practice
  • Assist students in developing, extending and applying complex strategies and approaches to the development of creative agendas, providing students with knowledge, skills, and confidence to solve multi-disciplinary problems in the context of art and design
  • Widen access to Higher Education by providing a student-centred curriculum offering master’s level studies, which recognises and accredits the learning of students through their work/experience-based learning in an appropriate, negotiated, self directed context
  • Provide the opportunity to develop industry experience and understanding through contact by placement, project and/or contact with professional practitioners.

Course Structure

The course has both full-time and part-time routes, comprising of three or five 14-week semesters, which you can take within one or up to three years respectively:  

For the full-time study option:

Semester 1 - October to February

Semester 2 - February to June

Semester 3 - June to September

You will take five core modules and will study one day a week for both full-time and part-time modes. Full-time students will have concentrated module delivery in both the morning and afternoon. Part-time students will only have module delivery in the morning or afternoon, depending on which year of study you are currently in, providing you with the opportunity to work independently on your current project for the remaining half a day a week whilst in attendance at the University.
