If you are already employed in a microbiology-related field, then this Foundation degree is designed as a vocational qualification which will help to develop your work-based skills and enhance your academic development.

You will learn about core knowledge and skills in applied aspects of microbiology.

You can obtain your Foundation degree at St Helens College through work-based experience and then have the option of continuing to an Honours degree based at the University of Salford.

Course details

This Foundation degree has been produced in response to the needs of this sector of industry, in which skilled labour is known to be in short supply. This is a apart time two year taught course, with attendance being one day per week. Year 1 is on a Thursday and year 2 on a Wednesday.

If you successfully complete the Foundation degree (year 2) you will be eligible to progress to year 3 of the BSc (Hons) Applied Bioscience degree course at the University of Salford, after taking a bridging programme during the summer break. You will need to study further, either for one year full-time or two years part-time to gain the BSc(Hons) degree.

Principles of Microbiology

Introduces you to microbiology as an applied science and provides a foundation in good microbiology practice.

Data Analysis

This module aims to provide you with a firm grounding in the important aspects of data collection, processing and analysis.

Basic Biochemistry

Provides a chemistry foundation for the study of biochemistry and an understanding of the key principles within biochemistry. Also introduces you to basic biochemical concepts.

Microbial Laboratory Skills

Provides you with the basic skills required to work in a microbiology laboratory.

Immunology

Provides you with a basic understanding into the principles of immunology.

Parasitology

Gain knowledge of the important parasites of human disease.

Year Two

Learning at Work

Provides you with the opportunity to gain accreditation for work experience and develop transferable employability skills.

Research Techniques

Encourages you to work independently, both in-depth and at length, on an approved topic within your field of study.

Microbial Genetics

Introduces you to the fundamental principles of microbial genetics. Learn to consider the methods, benefits and potential hazards of genetic engineering.

Microbial Ecology

Introduces you to the ecology of microorganisms found in the soil, atmosphere, water and on the human body.

Microbial Physiology

Study theoretical and practical microbial physiology with particular reference to nutrition, growth and metabolism.

Food Microbiology

Provides you with a basic understanding of the important processes of microorganisms in food production, food spoilage and food poisoning.

Medical Microbiology

Introduces you to medical microbiology to gain an insight into the diversity of pathogenic microorganisms.

Industrial Microbiology

Introduces you to industrial microbiology and enables you to identify microbiological mediated industrial problems.

Year Three

This is the top-up year taught at Salford which will lead to BSc(Hons) Applied Bioscience.

Biology of Parasites I (20 credits)

This module looks at the importance of human and animal parasites, in relation to medical, veterinary or wild life aspects, life-cycle biology, host response and the principles of parasite epidemiology and transmission, and strategies for parasite detection, diagnosis and control.

Medical and Public Health Microbiology (20 credits)

In this module you will be introduced to medical and public health microbiology, practical skills, methods of isolation, identification and typing of bacteria from various sources.

Topics in Human Physiology (20 credits)

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of selected human physiological systems including the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and the methodology used to monitor and assess cardiovascular and respiratory function.

Biotechnology (20 credits)

This module encourages an awareness of the importance of biotechnology in industry, and develops knowledge of a variety of biochemical processes in a range of important industrial applications.

Applied Hydrobiology (20 credits)

The module focuses on biology relevant to the water industry and organisations which regulate and control the aquatic environment, for example the Environment Agency. The major themes are biology associated with water resources and water pollution. The module will be enhanced by field studies and external visits.

Terrestrial Ecology (20 credits)

Study the consequence of human actions on the environment from prehistoric times to the present day, the appropriate ecological principles involved in plant-animal interactions and in the autecology of selected dominant species.

Biology of Parasites II (20 credits)

This module looks at the biology of selected parasites of human or veterinary importance and their interactions with hosts and vectors.

Clinical Immunology (20 credits)

This module looks at mammalian immunological mechanisms, the roles played by T and B cells/Lymphokines in generating an immune response and helps you develop an understanding of the genetics of antibody diversity, HIV pathogenesis and the current immunodiagnostic assays for infectious and non-infectious diseases.

Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology (20 credits)

This module will develop an understanding of the physiology of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in humans, and an awareness of methodology used to monitor and assess normal function and disorder in the cardiovascular and respiratory system.
