In this module you will study Burgess as a satirist, novelist and critic in light of the writing of his contemporaries such as Chinua Achebe, Alasdair Gray, B.S. Johnson, V.S. Naipaul, and Muriel Spark. The module will deepen your acquaintance with Burgess as a major 20th century author, but also extend and develop your understanding of a whole range of trends in modern fiction which still influence and inform the present day state of the art. The module is supported by the IABF, where many of the classes are taught, and you will have the opportunity to make use of the Burgess archive as part of your work on the module.

This course can be studied alone or as part of the MA Literature, Culture and Modernity.
