This course aims to develop qualified health care professionals to meet the challenge of specialist, advanced and consultant practitioner status in the field of medical imaging within a rapidly evolving health service.

You can further your professional development by taking a PGC in skeletal reporting, CT head reporting, all aspects of Ultrasound, or Mammography. Alternatively you could take a single module in a specific area, including Barium swallow and VF, CTC, or HSG - please enquire for other areas. Qualified sonographers can add to their competencies by taking modules covering obstetrics, gynaecology, abdominal, vascular, breast and MSK ultrasound. Mammographers can expand into other areas of Breast Imaging and Intervention.

Course details

This is a part-time course which enables you to continue working in your clinical placement, so that you gain the necessary practical experience while learning the academic information to develop your skills.

Course Structure

Advanced Medical Imaging runs part-time over three years giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

Postgraduate Certificate: two (30 credit) modules over one year or 18 months
Postgraduate Diploma: four (30 credit) modules over two years
Master of Science: four (30 credit) modules plus the dissertation module (60 credits) over three years

Your module choice will depend on your practice area and the profile of your award which should be discussed with the course team prior to commencement to establish a Negotiated Learning Agreement. This means your course is tailor-made to meet your exact learning requirements.

Year 1 and 2

Advancing Practice in Medical Imaging (30 credits)

Provides a negotiable and flexible route towards achieving advanced skills with a negotiated area of advanced practice such as:

Barium Swallows
Videofluoroscopy
Arthrograms

Screening and Diagnosis (30 credits)

Enables health care professionals to expand their role and evidence their clinical competence in a specialist field.

Fundamentals of Diagnostic Ultrasound (30 credits)

Equips you with the core skills and knowledge to provide a safe and effective ultrasound service in terms of use of ultrasound equipment and the professional application of clinical governance.

Clinical Application of Diagnostic Ultrasound (30 credits)

Negotiate a Clinical Learning Agreement to cover your specific area of interest, including gynaecology, assisted reproduction and early pregnancy, NT screening, the fetal anomaly scan and management of the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. All obstetric ultrasound courses incorporate the latest FASP recommendations. We also cover abdominal, vascular, MSK and breast ultrasound.

Publishing and Presenting in Health Care (30 credits)

An exciting module which supports health care professionals to develop their academic writing and presentation skills. A topic area related to health care practice and/or professional issues will be negotiated with your supervisor. This may include analysis and review of existing published research and/or discussion of practice-based audit findings in light of the literature.

Fundamentals of Radiological Reporting (30 credits)

Develops your skills of image interpretation and includes the philosophy and application of pattern recognition and clinical decision making for both the axial and appendicular skeleton, and by arrangement, CT head or other areas.

Radiology and Interpretation (30 credits)

Further develop your image interpretation to become a competent reporting practitioner in your chosen area.

Fundamentals of Mammography Practice 30 credits)

Develop the skills necessary to perform and critically evaluate routine mammographic examinations for the NHS Breast Screening Service.

Advanced Technique in Mammography Practice (30 credits)

Provides knowledge and skills to perform advanced mammographic techniques and use critical evaluation and decision making skills. Leads to the CoR Postgraduate Award in Mammography.

Research Methods (30 credits)
