Entry requirements
A good honours degree or equivalent
Applicants should be a native speaker (or equivalent standard) of English, French, German or Spanish and be able to demonstrate a high level of competency in their chosen foreign language
Native speakers of a language other then English must provide details of their proficiency in English.
We welcome applications from students with alternative qualifications and/or significant relevant experience, subject to approval through a process of Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).

Who is the programme for ?
Speakers of English and French, German, or Spanish, who want to become highly-trained translators, interpreters and linguists at an international level.
Programme content
This programme provides high-level interpreting and translating skills for careers in international and regional organisations or in the freelance sector. In addition to core and elective modules, you will also attend keynote lectures and seminars on specialised translation and business practice, delivered by invited professionals in this field, and participate in mock conferences. Topics and documents relate to fields covered in professional translation, such as economics, transport, telecommunications, medicine and international organisations.

- Principles and Strategies of Translation
- Business Interpreting
- Translation Project Management and Professional Skills
- Conference Interpreting - Two languages into English (French, German, Spanish) or one language into and from English
- Research Methodologies and Approaches in Translation and Interpreting Studies*
(compulsory for all students wishing to take the MA)
*Students wishing to take the PG Dip only will select ONE option from the following:
- Extended Translation
- Literary Translation
- Audiovisual Translation
The programme is taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and laboratory exercises and there is also the opportunity to participate in a series of mock conferences. The School of Languages helps to organise training placements for its students in the UK or other EU countries in an interpreting environment.
Assessment
Assessment for the award of the PgDip is based on a combination of coursework assignments and examinations. Following successful completion of the taught modules, students following the MA path are required to complete the dissertation component of the programme, in English, during the summer.
Career progression
Graduates can expect to pursue careers as professional linguists, either as freelance translators and interpreters, or in a translation department or company. Some graduates have developed careers in publishing and as translation managers and terminologists. A number of graduates of our Masters in Interpreting and Translating are working with international organisations in the EU including the European Commision (SCIC) as well as for a range of international companies such as SAP, Volkswagen, Alcatel, KPMG and Siemens.

International students: £8,600, per year, full-time

In the School of Languages we offer what we believe to be an unparalleled range of scholarships and fee exemptions to students beginning their studies in September 2008.
Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships
The School will be offering eight Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships of £1000 for use towards the payment of fees in the first year of study on the relevant programme. Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships are awarded in open competition to the eight most academically qualified self-sponsored students UK/EU applicants.
Postgraduate Fee Reduction for School of Languages Graduates
UK/EU graduates of the School of Languages at the University of Salford who have achieved a 2i or first class honours in their undergraduate studies will be offered a £750 reduction in the postgraduate fees on School of Languages' programmes, where they have not been awarded a Postgraduate Excellence Scholarship.

International Excellence Scholarships
If you are applying for a postgraduate course you will automatically be considered for an International Excellence Scholarship worth up to £2000.
