MA: one year full-time; three years part-time.
PgDip: nine months full-time; two years part-time.
Entry requirements
Applicants must be native speakers or have near-native competence in Arabic.
Non-Arabic applicants should have an honours degree, or equivalent, in Arabic.
Arab applicants should have a degree, or equivalent, in English or a related subject from a recognised institution.
We welcome applications from students with non-traditional qualifications and/or significant relevant experience in Arabic/English translation or interpreting, subject to approval through a process of Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).

Who is the programme for?
This programme is for students who want to become professional translators or interpreters, or to go on to PhD research and an academic career in these areas. Students are expected to be native speakers or near-native speakers of Arabic with a high level of competence in English, or native speakers or near-native speakers of English with a high level of competence in Arabic.
Programme content
The MA/PgDip in Arabic/English Translation and Arabic/English Translation with Interpreting, share a common core of modules:
- English to Arabic Translation
- Arabic to English Translation
- Information Technology and Professional Skills for Translation
- Lexicography and Terminology
- English for Academic Purposes
- Translation Studies
Students taking the MA/PgDip in Arabic/English Translation with Interpreting also take an Interpreting module.
A wide range of optional modules are also available. One optional module to be taken by students doing the MA/PgDip in Arabic/English Translation with Interpreting, and two to be taken by students doing the MA/PgDip in Arabic/English Translation:
- Specialised (technical) English to Arabic Translation
- Extended Translation
- Subsidiary Language (French, German, Spanish or Italian)
- Translation from French/German/Spanish/Italian into English
- Translation from English into French/German/Spanish/Italian
The elements of the programme are integrated in order to develop those skills in Arabic/English translation and interpreting most needed by international, governmental and non-governmental organisations, academic institutions and the media. The programme also provides a solid training in more theoretical aspects of translation for those students wishing to go on to doctoral research.
Assessment
Most of the modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and exams. Others are assessed by projects which simulate real-world translation tasks.
Career progression
Some of our graduates are employed in embassies or the British Council. Others work in the private sector, e.g. for translation agencies and petroleum development companies. A good proportion of students go on to PhD research and a career as university lecturers. In the School of Languages we offer what we believe to be an unparalleled range of scholarships and fee exemptions to students beginning their studies in September 2008.
Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships
The School will be offering eight Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships of £1000 for use towards the payment of fees in the first year of study on the relevant programme. Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships are awarded in open competition to the eight most academically qualified self-sponsored students UK/EU applicants.
Postgraduate Fee Reduction for School of Languages Graduates
UK/EU graduates of the School of Languages at the University of Salford who have achieved a 2i or first class honours in their undergraduate studies will be offered a £750 reduction in the postgraduate fees on School of Languages' programmes, where they have not been awarded a Postgraduate Excellence Scholarship.

International Excellence Scholarships
If you are applying for a postgraduate course you will automatically be considered for an International Excellence Scholarship worth up to £2000.
