Biography

I am a Professor of Acoustics and Associate Dean (Research & Innovation) of the College of Science and Technology in the University of Salford. I have over 30 years' experience of working in building and environmental acoustics. I worked in the motor industry in the area of vehicle noise and vibration for 2 years before joining the University in 1988, and was the Head of the University’s Acoustics Research Centre from 2000 to 2012.  I am known particularly for my expertise in the development and application of computer modelling and simulation in acoustics. I have a long track record of successful EPSRC (7 as PI and 5 as CI), European, and industrial funded research projects.  I worked closely with industrial partners to develop solutions from his research, leading to computer software widely used in the metal cladding manufacturing industry, noise reduction devices used in commercial noise barriers, and software modules for outdoor noise propagation. I am also interested in the interfacing of acoustics in multi-disciplinary research, especially the concept of nD Modelling for the built environment. Currently I am the PI of an EPSRC grant (EP/J022071) to develop enhanced acoustic modelling using hybrid boundary integral methods, and the PI of an EPSRC iCASE grant with the BBC investigating periphony for broadcast.  I also lead an internally funded project to develop an interactive soundscape simulator for heritage and urban regeneration research.  I have over 120 publications in journals, conferences and book chapters. I was awarded the Institute of Acoustics’ Tyndall Medal in 2000, and the Institute’s most prestigious Rayleigh Medal in 2012 for my contribution to acoustics. I was awarded Fellowship of the Acoustical Society of America in 2008 for my work in building acoustics.  I am the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal of Applied Acoustics and a member of several international and national standards committees and working groups. I co-chair the Conseil International du Bâtiment (CIB) W051 Commission on Acoustics.  I am also a Board member of the International Commission for Acoustics.
