Office Times

Dependent upon teaching timetable and therefore varies from semester to semester.

My commitments for the week are displayed on my door and updated weekly.  Students are welcome to see me if I am in, or to email to arrange an appointment.

Biography

Born and raised in the Midlands I came to Manchester to do my undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester in 1982.  I then stayed on to complete a PhD in Physics, which I was awarded in 1988.

After 12 months post-doctoral work I joined the Department of Physics at the University of Salford as a Lecturer.  I moved into the area of computer networking in 2000, becoming a Technical Trainer on the Microsoft operating systems, before returning to the University in December 2003 as a Lecturer in Computer Network Systems.

Teaching

I teach the second year undergraduate module Network Technologies and jointly teach the first year undergraduate module Professional Development & Practices, the second year module Networking Group Project, and the MSc modules Network Technologies, Architecture & Design and Wireless & Mobile Telecommunications.  I co-ordinate the first year module Communication Technologies in Context, on which I also deliver seminars and academic practice sessions, and the Final Year projects for the BSc in Computer Networks and the projects for the MSc in Data Telecommunication Networks.  I also supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate projects on both of these programmes.

Research Interests

My research interests are in the area of network security (both technical and societal aspects), and barriers to participation in STEM (eg as experienced by ethnic minorities and women).  I am also interested in promoting engagement with the public in the area of telecommunications.
