Professor Cynthia Pine, Centre Director, Honorary Professor University of Liverpool, PVC University of Salford, Honorary Consultant Salford Primary Care Trust.
Professor Cynthia Pine CBE is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Salford and Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health at NHS Salford. She is an international public health researcher with over 80 refereed journal papers, over £2m research funding awarded; book chapters author and editor of the textbook, Community Oral Health. From her position as a Visiting Professor at the University of Liverpool, Cynthia is the Director of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Research in Oral Health in Deprived Communities leading a co-operative network between the two universities and NHS Salford.
Dr Rebecca Harris, Co-Director, University of Liverpool, Senior Lecturer, Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health
Dr Rebecca Harris is Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health. She is the lead for Dental Public Health at the University of Liverpool for both research and teaching. Her principal areas of research are in the organisation of dental care, including skill mix, the use of financial incentives and contracts, and access to care. Widely published in peer- reviewed journals, she is also co-editor and chapter author of the textbook Community Oral Health.
Professor Pauline Adair, School of Health Sciences, University of Salford
Pauline Adair is a health and clinical psychologist and has worked on several oral health projects over the past 15 years covering behavioral determinants of dental caries in children, interventions for preventing child dental caries, recruitment and retention in oral health RCTs and psychological interventions for managing dental anxiety. This has resulted in over 20 refereed journal papers in this field. She currently supervises four PhD and one MPhil students in oral health research projects.
Louise Robinson, WHO Centre Manager University of Salford
Louise graduated in Geography. She has since gained considerable experience in project management and programme administration, having previously co-ordinated a portfolio of 94 projects on behalf of a national charity. She is also experienced in collaborative working with expertise in effective partnership working in cross-sector programmes of work.
Rosy Armstrong, Clinical Trial Co-ordinator University of Salford
A registered dental hygienist with experience in general dental practice and dental research in industry and academia. Rosy has an MPhil in aspects of decision making for clinical management of patients. She is also an experienced clinical trial coordinator and has an interest in medical writing and communication.
Dr Girvan Burnside, Statistician University of Liverpool
Girvan has worked as a statistician specialising in the dental area for over 10 years, with considerable experience in clinical trials and dental epidemiology. His research interests include methodological issues in the design and analysis of dental caries clinical trials, and multilevel modelling of dental data.
Dr Steve Brown, Senior Lecturer, Health psychology, University of Liverpool
An experienced health psychologist with many peer reviewed journal articles and supervision of doctorate students. His research interests include risk factors for smoking and alcohol consumption.
Dr David Jamil, Lecturer, Dental Public Health, University of Liverpool
Jamil qualified as a dentist from Manipal University in India and obtained a Masters in Dental Public Health at Queen Mary’s University, London. His PhD from the University in Bergen, Norway was on dental caries among adolescents and implications for planning services in India and Norway.
Anna Cooper, PhD Student University of Salford
Anna’s BSc is in Psychology with Neuropsychology and is a member of the British Psychological Association. Her main area of expertise and interest is working with primary school aged children; through this she has worked as a play therapist in Manchester working 1:1 with children. Anna has also undertaken a Masters in Counselling and has worked with teenagers on a pregnancy scheme. She is currently undertaking a PhD around working with year two children on a school oral health programme that has a focus on making oral health behaviours a routine in the home.
Sarah Elison, PhD Student University of Salford
Sarah has a BSc in Psychology and an MSc in Philosophy of Mental Disorder. She also obtained an MPhil in 2009 and has worked in child clinical and health psychology research for the past 7 years. She has had her work published in a number of psychology and medical journals. Her main area of area of research interest is development of early interventions to reduce social inequalities in child developmental outcomes.
Lucy O’Malley, PhD Student University of Salford
Lucy completed a first degree in Sociology and Social Policy; she has a Masters in Social Research Methods and is a member of the British Sociological Association. She has particular interests in the areas of health and illness, embodiment and identity and is currently undertaking a PhD in Dental Public Health focused on improving access to dental health services for children living in Salford through a combination of public and service engagement and health service development.
Abir Abdel Rahman, PhD Student, University of Salford
Abir has a background in medical laboratory sciences, public health and health services administration. Abir has a particular interest in research related to families and children. She is currently undertaking a PhD in Public Health focused on improving the oral health of Lebanese children. Abir will examine the diet patterns and food habits of this group of children.
Richard Freeman, PhD Student, University of Salford
Richard has worked in public services for over 20 years and is currently Associate Director of Primary Care Commissioning at Salford PCT. Prior to working at Salford, Richard worked for the Audit Commission carrying out Value for Money audits. He has Undergraduate and Masters Degrees in Economics and more recently, completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Economics.
Olushola Ibiyemi, PhD Student University of Salford
Olushola is a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Masters in Public Health graduate of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. His main area of research interest is dental caries prevention behaviours among various population groups in developing settings. He is currently undertaking a PhD in Public Health focused on dental caries prevention behaviours among secondary school-aged children in Ibadan, Nigeria. As part of the PhD work, he is reviewing research on clinical effectiveness of behavioural interventions among secondary school-aged children.
Alexander Montasem, University of Liverpool
Alex has a Bachelor degree in sociology and social psychology as well as two Masters degrees (Pschology and Social Science). He has previously worked as a research officer undertaking research on health behaviour change. His
PhD recognises the World Health Organisation definition of health as not only as the absence of disease and infirmity but also as a “positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources"; and applies this to the area of dentists’ well-being. His work involves investigation of the influence of personality and personal goals on dentists’ well-being.
Ningwei Sun, University of Liverpool
Ningwei a BA in Business Administration as well as a MSc in Health Management. From a general health background she has focused her PhD studies on the UK dental health care system and in particular the use of dental therapists. Her PhD is a qualitative study using case study methodology and examines how dental therapists can be effectively incorporated into dental practice teams.
