Staff & PGR Students Research Ethics

The College of Health and Social Care Research, Innovation and Academic Engagement Ethical Approval Panel considers applications for ethical approval of research projects from academic staff and postgraduate research students in the College of Health and Social Care.

The University requires research to be consistent with basic ethical principles. These are general judgements which serve as a basic justification for the many particular ethical prescriptions and evaluations of human actions.

The University in particular is guided by three specific basic ethical principles:

  • Respect the autonomy of human research subjects
  • Do no harm to researchers or human research subjects
  • Act justly towards those who contribute to your research

The aim of the College Research Ethics Panel is to facilitate research whilst protecting the University, researchers and research subjects.

Please note: If you are an undergraduate or a postgraduate student on a taught programme, you will need to apply to the College Research Governance Ethics Committee see our Taught Programme Ethics page

How to Apply

We require that both a hard copy of the application, signed by your Head of School (or supervisor for postgraduate research students) and an anonymised electronic copy of all paperwork be submitted before an application can be sent out for review.

Applications should be sent to Rachel Shuttleworth, Allerton AD101.

Please note if you are intending to carry out research projects in the NHS, you must also obtain NHS research ethics approval. The normal procedure is to apply for College Ethics approval before proceeding to NHS Research Ethics approval (Details of how to apply for NHS ethics approval can be found at the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS).
