Clinical Practice Wards

Our Clinical Practice Wards are located in the Mary Seacole Building on the second floor. There are 4 rooms designed to give the look and feel of a hospital environment. The rooms are furnished with patient’s beds, lockers, chairs, sinks and curtains as well as audio-visual equipment, internet and a teaching area.

A wide range of training aids and equipment are available for practice, including:

  • Venepuncture and cannulation training arms
  • Catheterisation, tracheostomy , intramuscular and enema training aids
  • Skeletons
  • Torsos
  • Adult, child and infant resuscitation mannequins
  • Electrocardiograph machine
  • Defibrillator
  • Dinamaps electronic blood pressure machine

Clinical Practice Ward 2The practice wards have been developed to allow students to learn the art and science of their chosen profession in a safe and relaxed environment.

Students at the university currently use the wards to learn skills from the most basic:

  • Handwashing
  • Bed/Cot-making
  • Bed-bathing
  • Eye care
  • Eating and drinking
  • Elimination
  • Paediatric/Adult basic life support
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
  • First aid to a person who is choking
  • Observational skills and physiological measurement, including, temperature, pulse and blood pressure

To the more complex:

  • Urinary catherterisation and catherer care
  • Injection technique
  • Medicine administration
  • Neurological observation
  • Intravenous fluid replacement therapy
  • Nasogastric intubation
  • Care of the deceased person
  • Bleeding and shock procedures
  • Managing violence and aggression
  • Asepsis

Clinical Practice WardWe also have 2 moving and handling rooms, equipped with hoists and handling aids and audio-visual.
